How hard is it to add power steering to a 1964 Lemans? What would be the average cost at a professional garage?
How rare would a 1964 Lemans convetible with a factory 4 spped be? The car has a 326. Many thanks, David |

Power Steering was available as a Dealer Accessory Package so I don't think it would be all that hard to swap out.
You would need the pump with bracketry and pump pulley. Easiest would be to use the late year single groove pulley arrangement, that way you don't have to change the alternator pulley. Your balancer pulley if original, should allow for the PS belt. You also need the power steering gear. Beyond that, I'm not sure. I have no idea of the cost to have it done. Check parts sellers or ebay for parts. The pump and bracketry were same for the Tempest and big Pontiac so I'd guess not too hard to acquire. I'd say the model is pretty rare. They made about 17,500 of them, almost 3X as many as '64 GTO convertibles. However, since they weren't seen as collectible, many were cloned into GTOs and many others were cut up to donate parts for a GTO resto. The 2 bbl 326 probably accounted for the biggest chunk of them. The 4 bbl 326 HO option would be more rare. No idea how many got the 4 spd but it is the same Muncie box used in the GTO. Love to learn more about yours. |

To add to the list be sure you get a PS Pitman arm as well.
Hoses can be made if you can't secure oem/nos/nors; Price would depend on shop and/or condition of car as well as parts to be used. i.e. rusty/cruddy parts take longer to disassemble/reassemble. IMO even If everything is clean and ready to install your still looking at least half a day, but worth it ![]()

my '64 has mis-matched pulleys and brackets and i just bought all the correct '64 pieces. I can send pix to a phone if it would help. I had a tough time gathering the correct parts...but others will work. I have proof of that as well. Anyway...let me know if I can help. I dealt with three different vendors at the Nat's to get my correct pieces. Maybe someone here has a complete set-up.

Regrettably that one is not mine
![]() It was on the field at the GM Nats and was in amazing condition with all the right stuff. Nice to see a Lemans with performance parts.

Here is a pump and bracket set that recently sold on ebay.
I don't recall if the pump pulley was different for an A/C car, I don't think so. But this shows what you need for the pump portion, exclusive of the mounting bolts. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1964-Pontiac...p2047675.l2557 Here's another that included some of the bolts but not the pump. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1964-pontiac...p2047675.l2557 The Tempest and the big Pontiac shared the same pump bracket arrangement. |
