Default 62 tempest 4 banger to v8

hi guys been a while since I have been on, just wondering, I bought a 63 engine after I blowed up the original 62 engine, have not had any luck getting it going. First problem after putting it back together, got a lot of water in the oil!!! The head was on the engine when I got it, the engine was sold as a rebuilt engine!!! I changed the head gasket. Could not get more than 85 lbs on all 4 cylinders. not sure if rings are stuck from setting or if the engine was not rebuilt at all. It did come from a reputable guy!! My question is the car has a 2 speed trans axle, will the bell housing bolt up to a 326, or a 400??? I have a good running 400, and may have access to a 326! will the trans axle survive under the 400? I don't want to build a race car just a driver???
thanks
Scott

The auto will handle more HP with street tires. The 4 cyc models have a smaller rope shaft and your 400 will have to have the crank drilled and tapped to hook to the rope shaft.a 63 326 will just bolt up but I think you will need the 63 tempest V8 bellhousing.Tom

2000 complete. Already rebuilt. The 65 326 shortblock isn't plug n play in a 63 auto transaxle Tempest. You can use the 65 top half on the 63 326, if so desired.
