1974 GTO Power steering tech advice on Parts
I am looking into installing a power steering kit on my 1974 GTO hence engine swapped to 400CI. Can you advice what parts are required to install the power steering. I have asked Ames but came out short with no advice on combinations of pumps or what so ever.
I need tech advice on what parts i need or to look for as in steering components, steering column fitments hoses pumps etc. Any website links & your personal feedback will be much appreciated. Thanks. |

So you're swapping?
Sounds like you're doing a manual steering to power steering, correct? Will go off on a '70 LeMans/GTO, but others similar.
These parts are some to check with junkyards, ebay, APE fourm, craigslist. 1) Power steering gear box (can use any other GTO's from '64-'74) with 3.0 turn to turn. The gearbox for GM was the same one from '64-'76, can also use the '80-later GM and Jeep Grand Cherokee power steering gear box. 2) Steering shaft (check for junkyards with '73 & '74 Nova/Omega/Ventura/Apollo), since it will be the same for all four cars with power steering. 3) Al the power steering accessories (check on the forum for '74 cars). Doesn't have to be from a GTO. Can also use the Firebird/Formula/Trans Am; Bonneville/Grandville/Catalina; LeMans/Grand Am/Grand Prix 1974 engine with accessories. This will include the pulleys, brackets, nuts and bolts needed. Before removal, take picutres and have ziplock bags for the nuts/bolts with corresponding locations. 4) Rag joint from steering gearbox to steering shaft. These parts can be obtained at auto part stores 5) Power steering fluid. 6) Power steering pressure and return. 7) Power steering fan belt. 8) Rag joint rebuild kits. Parts needed on the swap: 9) Tie Rod separator 10) break-over bars (3/8" and 1/2" drives) 11) sockets/wrenches ranging from 7/16 to 1 5/16 12) pitman arm puller 13) open-box end wrenches for the hoses. 14) 3/8" and 1/2" drives ratchets with corresponding sockets. Those seem to be everything that comes to mind. Good luck in the project. Last edited by SteveGB21; 06-01-2015 at 04:00 PM. Reason: Forgot to add. |

The swap.
Metric sockets and wrenches needed for the '80 and later GM and Jeep Grand Cherokee ('93-'02). Best to use again the 3/8" drive and 1/2" drive break-over bars and ratchets.

The Swap on the '80-later or Jeep Grand Cherokee gear box.
You will also need to get some adapters if you go this route. The corresponding rag joint on these vehicles also. |
