Glad you came out of it okay.
NHRA requires them above a certain speed...can't remember what that is.
And they are necessary on high pressure truck/trailer tires.

We have metal stems on all of the race cars, truck and trailer.

I use short stubby rubber stems off motorbikes. They seem quite stiff and less prone to flexing. Neat and out of harms way and designed for jap sports bikes.

Sorry to hear of your near catastrophe but these things should be checked on a regular bases. Anytime I'm heading out I always check my tire pressure, not just a "looks good" but with a gauge, not likely to miss dry rotted rubber with this routine.
I value life and my cars too much for that.

Good to hear you came out of that with no major damage other than maybe your shorts?
I have an old Nissan Patrol with nearly 20 yr old tires. Go ahead and cal me stupid? It's not a DD just a farm heap, doesn't see much road duty. Hell my 23 Model T tires are 25+/- a few years old.

Great advice regarding valve stems. I had to run into town earlier this evening and pick up my sister in law and her kids. The front drivers wheel on her mini-van sheared off the studs and went for a joy ride. Scarey as she was about to get on the freeway.

I've been enjoying a 1988 Honda I bought last spring with 1,946 miles on it- and on its OEM tires. I'm considering new tires before next summer...

Question Had a close call on this myself

I often drive a Toyota Hi-Ace 1 tone van. Only a few months ago I had driven it from Melbourne to Sydney, 10 hours constant driving at 60MPH. The very next day, I had just pulled up at some lights and the front right tyre just went "Whooosh".

Dead flat in a second. The valve stem literally sheared off at the rim!!! I couldn't believe it. Tyres were about 4 years old and only 50% worn. But had the shop replaced the stems when I bought the tyres??? Who can say???

But I can sure tell you that ANY TYRE I have replaced since, I make VERY VERY sure it has new valves fitted.

Ian

There was a recall on valve stems made by a Chinese manufacturer some years ago: http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/n...nded/index.htm Depending on when your tires were installed, that could have been the problem.
