Just got a 1992 Formula
Found this 1992 Formula on craigslist not running. The kid that owned it seemingly could not drive either as it has hit a few things. But the underside is very, very clean and the car only has 69,000 miles on it. I got it running by putting in a new ignition module and charging the battery, which was easy enough. I am conflicted on what to do, the engine bay is very original and clean, but if I keep the car I would want to swap a 5.3 LS in place of the gutless 305, or I could just flip the car. What would you all do?

Leave the 305 in and drive it!

But maybe put a tire on that front wheel first

I just realized I put the in the 93-02 forum!
But I got a tire on it and have put 100 miles on it. Other than the suspension being soft as a cloud, it drives beautifully. Very slow.

Just got a 92 Formula
Last Wednesday I picked up this 70k mile Formula from a younger kid. The car didn't run and I got it real cheap. Swapped out the ignition module and the 305 came to life. The car drives pretty well, but needs some refresh on the suspension. It looks like it was a southern car by the lack of any major rust on it. The last owner did hit a few things with it, so it needs a new door fender and bumper though. I am unsure if I will drive the car for awhile and then sell it as is, or keep it as a potential future investment.
If I keep it, I will probably swap out the 305 for a 5.3 ls based engine or an lt1 as they are available fairly cheap and easily adapted into this car. The engine bay is pretty much untouched.

That is a base Firebird. A Formula doesn't have the W62 ground effects, pedestal rear spoiler or the flat hood.
I'd say do what you want with it. A base Firebird(or a Formula with the L03 TBI 305 if it actually was one) are never going to be high dollar cars. Modify and enjoy.

Base Firebirds and Formulas used the same VIN code(5th digit = S) The RPO code for the Formula option is W66. The Level III suspension WS6 code will also be present as that was standard on Formulas. Make sure the VIN number on the RPO SPID label matches the cars VIN. Sometimes interior parts get swapped out after 25 years.
If it really is a Formula somebody went through a lot of trouble to make it look like a base Firebird. The wheels are even the base Firebird 15x7 diamond spoke wheels instead of the 16x8 wheels that the Formula used. |

For reference, this is what a '92 Formula looks like. Note the body differences.

Yup, as said above, its a base bird. The rpo code decal is in the driver side locking compartment in the hatch. W66 = Formula and WS6 is standard with formula.
It is however a nice pretty clean car. Drive it guilt free and enjoy

I have been driving it a bit so far and it does run great whether or not it is a formula or apparently not. One of the RPO codes is for "soft ride suspension" which is definitely worn down now as the thing floats all over the road.
I just received poly bushings and new ball joints for the car. It will go through the routine for all my cars, upgrade the suspension before the power. Next step will be to lower it an inch or so and get new shocks/struts to help it be more stable. Not bad for a cheap little bird.

Send me the VIN I can download the complete RPO list for you.
Like others have said, not a Formula but still a decent car.
