Default Fuel pump issues....

on a 61 389......real stock and original....

runs good....pulls well on the bottom end.....and starts quick......unless it's been sitting for a few days....
Then it takes a bit of cranking....like the fuel has to come up from the tank...

I'm guessing the check valves in the pump are done...

It has one of those crimped unitac style pumps on it and I'm prolly going to go with an Airtex 4512 that has the screwed together housing...or an old AC if I can find one...

Heard stories about the new gas causing problems with pump diaphrams, etc.

Are they actually making new pumps with alcohol resistant diaphrams?

I've had issues with new replacement pumps expiring....and had better luck with old store stock ones...that have been around for a while...

Any input before I buy?

I have the same problem this year. And I suspect the check valves also. I'll keep watching to see what the consensus is on a new pump. I don't like the ides of what may be listed as an "original" NOS or a "rebuilt". When was it original and when was it rebuilt? Before or after the ethanol problems started? I generally don't buy ethanol for my 61 even when it is the more economical option (pumps in this area generally say they have both but who knows for sure). So I also want to know who sells a real ethanol safe pump.

In the mean time I'm going to put in a electric pusher and a check valve. That may stop the drain back and maybe I'll know what the problem may be. And I'll also have a way to prime after extended sitting which I need anyway to keep from frying the starter.

I used a Carter with the screws and clocked it 1-screw inboard to the engine for a perfect fit. The first 3-pics are before I clocked it, the last you can just see the hardline coming off the pump closer to the block.

I have the carter on a couple other cars and no issues but I only run non ethanol fuel as well 92 or 110.
That is a 62 amp Delcotron squirrel cage alternator.
