If your car was built before January 1965 (or so) the lower ball joints may not be replaceable and you will need to replace the lower control arms. if there is a plate welded under the joint, you are changing the arms. I'm going through this right now with my car.

I have the same situation. My control arms have the welded plate. But the new ball joints line up and fit good or so it seems..I cut off the welded plate. Im not sure what to do..

Replace the lower control arms with units off a 66-70 b body Pontiac. If you have the plates welded on or the early 65 arms with the curved lips, the ball joints are not to be replaced.
The plate was added in production after reports of the control arm breaking at the ball joint. They purged the warehouses of the original style arm mid December 1964, replacing it with the one with the welded plate. After the 66's came out, that became the service replacement for the 65's...

Bjoern, search this subforum...
I keep misplacing the thread, but in this subforum I posted years ago the VIN 'cutoff' broken out my final assembly plant whether the front suspension is the early or late design (on the '65 model year DarkSiders).
This isn't what I was thinking of, but one of the (seemingly) several times I have posted this... http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...pension&page=2 ...go to post #26. Hope it helps! |

This is a separate front end issue covered in News Flash 65-42 dated 11-23-64.
I'll try to rescan the document as a jpeg and post later today or tomorrow.

This is the first I heard of this. Of course I had to go look, thankfully no plates or curly edges!

My 65 GP is a C143xxx and has the plates and curled edges..what Im hearing is that in late 64 Pontiac decided the arms were weak and the factory welded the plates to the arms..thr cutoff VIN was when the 66 style arms were installed from thw factory and the curled ones discontinued forever.
I decided to remove the plates, install the balljoints and reweld the plates back in place. My GP has gone 155,000 miles in the plated arms with no problems so Im keeping it that way.i believe arms with the plates are safe but incinvenient when ball joint replacement is necessary and NOT a defective part... |

Lower ball joint bolts MUST be installed from the top down or the steering arm will contact the bolt stud when turning
