Formula 455 Ho
Thanks everyone its been a fun ride this week. This was pretty much the story book find for me.
Like a lot of board members, I saw the car on e-bay but there was no pictures posted of the motor. I e-maild the owner for the numbers on the heads and when he replyed I was off for a two hour drive into farm country. The owner had the car stored in a nice dry "You Store It" warehouse for the last 16 years. He purchased the car from a friend in Florida who needed the money. The car was titled but never put on the road...it turns out he's a Mopar guy. After reading "whats it worth" lets just say members would be proud of the deal I made. After a handshake..... he was offered more money but kept his word. A couple of things that stand out....parts on the engine that usually show a lot of ware do to heat are in realiy nice shape like the choke, stove pipe, cross over.... the title shows 65517, could this be actual milage? I would say that 90 percent of the car parts are original. It do's seem that it had a hood tach...would that of been listed on the options? Todd |

If on from new the hood tach would have been dealer installed - none from the factory.

The nice thing with today's paint choices. Factory blends tend to be boring, and not much pop.
But, a Rosewood with some pop can be a major improvement over the stock blend. The white interior in 71 has iradeescent in it too.

I've always loved Rosewood. For the 1971 GTO, it's the rarest color. I suspect it was something more common on a full-size car than a performance car. I don't see it as brown - ya gotta see a fresh pic of a car to see what it really is. It's kinda a reddish bronze but even that may not be an accurate description. All I know is I'd love to have a Goat in that color.

It is interesting that a car ordered with so many options wasn't ordered from the factory with the tach (has Rally Gauges w/ Clock, rather than Rally Gauges w/ Tach). That had to have been a special ordered car. So either the original owner wanted the hood tach and ordered it without the dash tach intentionally. Or there was a screw-up or misunderstanding, and when the car came in without tach the owner decided the easiest "fix" was the hood tach.
All around cool car - will be beautiful when restored.

I thought the hood tach had a legitimate RPO in 1970 & 1971 - but the clincher was that it couldn't be ordered on a car that had an in dash tach;
I had understood that when ordered it was shipped with the car, and installed at the recieving dealership; Am I way off? I would say that it is quite possible that this car was ordered with the 'gauges w/clock' by accident - and thatbit was "fixed" by the servicing dealer - that seems highly plausible to me. Congrats on the stellar Formula!
