Default Edelbrock e heads 87cc or 72cc

There is a local guy on CRaigslist that is selling a set of e heads and I went to look at them, but I'm confused at what I'm looking. I cannot tell if they are the 72cc or 87cc version.
The part number is 6056 on them and according edlbrock website they are 87cc, however they also say Performer RPM, which is supposed to be the 72cc version, right?

I think I also read that the 72cc version doesn't have the exhaust crossover, is that right?
Other than measuring the chamber with a syringe and water is there any way to tell?
I don't want to lose out on a good deal if they are the 72cc. And I also don't want to buy a set of 87cc.
The seller doesn't have any of the paperwork, so I just couldn't buy them and hope they were the right ones.

Thanks, Oz
I'll post the CL link hopefully nobody here buys them from under me.

So does that mean they are pretty old then? Any reason to worry about how old they are?

I would ask for clarification on who did the port work. Bad porting is worst than not being done.

I asked about the port work and all he could say is some guy in Huntington Beach ported them, again, I couldn't get much info about the heads. However the port work looked nice and smooth on the intake and exhaust. Definitely professionally done. He did say he was making 560hp at the wheels.

From Edelbrock General Instruction sheet, Revision 8/99

Performer RPM heads

Catalog #6056 ( bare pair, 87cc chambers )

At the time all castings carried the came part number cast into them and the different chamber size was machined into the casting. But the different versions carried assigned part numbers to them in the catalog and instruction sheets. Example the part number 6057 was assigned to a complete assembled pair of 87cc heads. The bare pair of 72cc heads was assigned part number 6058. The assembled 72 cc heads was assigned part number 6059.

These were the early part numbers. Later catalogs were changed, example the 87cc bare pair carried p/n 60569 (2007 catalog)

IMPORTANT NOTICE: ALL EDELBROCK PONTIAC HEAD CASTINGS HAVE "6056" CAST INTO THEM. THIS IS EDELBROCKS CORE PART NUMBER OF THE CASTING. EXAMPLE: ALL THE 6050, 6056, 6057, 6058, 6059 ECT., PART NUMBERS HAVE 6056 CAST INTO THE HEAD UNDER THE VALVE COVER. IGNORE IT.

(again keep in mind these are older part numbers )

What Steve said all have the same casting # on the head and not sure I've ever seen a part number stamped on the head.

Easy way to tell 87cc chambers are machined, 72cc cast. New version end head bolt holes in the valve cover area are about the same height as middle bolts, early heads short bolts there.

My 72cc have generally measured closer to 75.

Fooper probably did not do them as he is 1.5 hrs east of the Van Nuys area.

Huntington Beach is about 55 miles south of Van Nuys, down by San Deigo.

Obviously I can't comment on how good or bad the port work is on your heads. But I made almost 600 hp with the old style chambers. If they are a good deal I would hesitate to pull the trigger. .

300 CFM (28") early E-head on boost is good enough for 1600 HP.
Jim Valeco did 5 sets of early E-Heads, a year after when they first were introduced, so these would be the 2nd small run of heads by Edelbrock.

Of those 5 sets, my heads were the best flowing of the bunch and were no more than 300 cfm. All were conservatively ported.

I would not worry a bit about the heads making an easy 600 naturally aspirated or 1000 hp with less than 18 psi of boost.

Similar, I bought a early set of Edelbrock 87cc heads in 1999 or 2000 if memory serves me right. Not long after I had them ported by a fellow who at the time owned and ran a bicycle shop. About 313 cfm at .600" and with a low 9.7 compression they supported 600.9 hp at 6000 rpm with a Victor intake.

Well the heads that you posted the link for were actually very good early Edlebrock 72 cc heads, not 87cc heads. But other heads will pop up I am sure.

Heads might have been done by Juan Mendoza who owns Flow Technology in Garden Grove (inland a bit from Huntington Beach, but close). The man does really nice work. Les Iden (Wheelspin) had a set of iron heads ported by Mendoza on the old Firebird engine.

Most of Fulpers so called porting jobs where just a sand and polish ( Eye candy !), and if the flow picked up 10 to 15 cfm over stock you where doing good!

Isn't there a gentleman named Tim Knightengale (sp?) well known for porting Pontiac heads in the area?

Tom Schlauch has reported Mendoza in Huntington Beach doing great work and was reasonable. Does a lot of NHRA super stock work. He did his tunnel port heads.

( correction on my dates posted, my 72cc heads were 1999/2000, the 87cc heads came a bit later )
