Default FS: 1964 GTO Tripower 4sp factory AC

I’m thinning the herd and I’ve decided to sell my frame-off restored 1964 GTO hardtop. I’ve owned the car since the summer of ’05, and I’ve been putting the finishing touches on the restoration since that time. I’d estimate 1500 miles on the complete body-off restoration.

This is a PHS documented tripower, 4-speed, AC car in original code DD Silvermist gray with 214 black interior. I looked for many years across the country to find a car optioned this way in this condition. It’s a Pontiac, MI car built the first week of June. I have the original wheels and deluxe caps, but have added Hurst wheels and radial redlines. PS and PB were added during the restoration. Other factory options include 3.23 safe-t-trac, full tint, pushbutton radio with manual antenna, console (mint and correct ’64 only part), padded dash, and windshield washer / dual-speed wiper. All of these options are present. Odometer shows 75k, believed to be original.

Since I purchased the car, I have added the Hurst wheels and radial redlines, mint correct ’64 console, restored taillight and gas door assemblies, new PS pump and correct hoses, NOS horn relay, ’64 only bellhousing inspection plate, and many other odds and ends. If you are familiar with ‘64s, you know how expensive just the console and taillight assemblies can be (a mint console just brought almost $2000 on eBay). The taillights can run $1000-1500 to rechrome if you can find a set in good enough condition to be restored. I also have gathered most of the rare and expensive ’64-only AC parts needed to get the AC going. The AC works!

I also went through the engine with the help of Paul Spotts, who converted a set of 716 heads to screw-in studs for reliability. I have the original dated heads that go with the car. Mike Wasson restored the tripower carbs. I also installed an 068 RAIII cam.

This isn’t an over-the-top restoration, but you’re almost guaranteed to have the nicest restored GTO at any local event and I proudly display this car with mirrors underneath. It could be a trailer queen with a little work, but that was never my intention with the car.

Asking $49,900.00. Feel free to PM for more info and/or my email or phone number.

I also have a mint condition '64 wood wheel assembly that could be included in the sale.

Hi Matt. Nice car. Does it have its original "born with" engine?

thanks,

Chris

Hey Chris - As you probably know that's a tough one on these early cars without a protect-o-plate or other documentation. I have paperwork from two prior owners and it was sold to both of them (as well as myself) advertised as having a matching numbers engine. It is a '64 76X block dated within 6-months of the build date, which I understand is the general judging standard. I'll have to look what the exact date is, I want to say March but I should double check to be sure.

If I recall correctly, the intake and heads are dated in May and the car is an 06A (1st week of June) build. So they are very likely original to the car. And just so it's clear, I have the original heads oiled and bagged, and used a '63-dated set of 716s which were converted to screw-in studs for an adjustable and more reliable valvetrain. I didn't want to do that to the correctly dated heads. Fortunately the 716 heads are dated under the valve covers so the swap isn't noticeable without removal of the valve covers.

Matt, Nicely written ad with great pictures. I wish I can say I was in the market for a car like this but not right now. Looks like a great car with excellent price point. Somebody is going to get a heck of a GTO. Good luck with the sale my friend.

If it's not sold in the meantime, I plan to have this car at the AACA National Spring Meet on Saturday May 21, at the New Jersey Motorsports Park.

This has got to be one of the nicest 64's out there. What kind of metal work (if any) did it require?

thanks,

Chris

Hey Chris. The car was originally advertised as all original sheetmetal, but I was able to determine that the panel between the rear window and trunk was replaced prior to my purchase. After I bought it, I did a search and located several prior owners which is where I got the "before" pictures shown above. From those pics it's obvious that the car has had at least lower rear quarters, although they are finished inside and out and basically undetectible. It also looks like floor work would have been necessary but that appears to have been properly done as well as there's no obvious floor repair visible underneath. And the trunklid was replaced at some point as well. I'd also assume there was some rear window channel work done as well, and perhaps a trunk floor.

Well the AACA National Spring Meet was a complete washout. Assuming it's not sold in the meantime, I'll have this and my '65 at the Pypes / Max Performance Car Show June 17-18.

2017 bump. Just finished an extensive underhood re-detail and installed a rebuilt A/C compressor.
