Default 65 core support swap

Can you change out a core support with out removing the fenders? I hope so just had 3000 worth of paint work done. Going with A/C core support.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Greg

Call up Scott Tiemann at Super Car Specialities in Portland Michigan.

He does a great deal of Restoration work on many really nice GTOs and Firebirds as well as Big Pontiacs. HE WOULD KNOW.

You may already know this, but you can cut the bottom radiator support out of your non-A/C core support and weld an A/C one in it's place or just cut the one you have out and turn it upside down to accommodate the thicker radiator. If done by a skilled welder, you'd never see the mod. That's much simpler than changing the support.

Is the opening wide enough to fit the 17" x ? radiator?

Thanks Greg

I've read that replacing it is possible without fender removal, but you're better off removing the fenders to avoid paint damage.

Proper conversion of your old support won't be simple nor cost less than the correct one you already bought.

take the bumper off with brackets. unbolt filler panel and upper filler panel . grilles can stay attached. remove mount bolts and wires and hoses. now spread fenders a little not enough to push back into doors. core support will come straight out (forward)

no need to remove fenders. more risk of alignment and chips

go slow and look to see if all bolts are removed .

this will require NO pulling and banging

Glad to hear that. Doing the mod on the core support to make it a A/C (taller) unit, I am told by Scott Tiemann is not a big deal if you have the extra parts.

Take your time and you will be fine on the reinstall.

I bet you have a beautiful 65. Post up some pics when you get it done.
