Oil Pan with kick out pic
Does anyone have a picture of a oil pan for 69 A body with the full kick out.
I have a Canton 7 qt pan with pickup. Trying to figure out how to make mine like the ones with a big kickout and the trap doors ect. I am a welder so I can fabricate what I need and get it done. Just need some pics/ideas. Thanks for any help. |

Thank you very much JS, those are very helpful pics.
I know its on the engine, but do you have some trap door stuff going on inside ? Did you make it out of a factory pan ? I have a bunch laying around. |

I do not have any of the inside, That is a Canton oil pan. When I bought it, it was not that expensive. I did have to elongate the holes on one side to get it to fit. It comes with the pick up too. If you go on the site I think it shows you the inside of the pan.

Probably already been there, but pictures of Canton pans here....
https://www.cantonracingproducts.com...&category=1503 And note they use the term System Capacity on their pans: Our oil capacities are listed as system capacity. This includes the oil in the pan and the filter. Any additional oil accessories need to be calculated appropriately. .

Has anyone who modded the engine cross-member, (in a GTO) ever used the 15-450 - PONTIAC SHALLOW RR PAN
(that Canton says will not fit in a stock GTO frame)? Tom V.

Tom I did the opposite extended the sump forward on the 452 GTO pan to get an F body pan 1" deeper.

Found this tid bit from years ago, it might be of interest....
Stef's Fabrication Specialties has done away with hand-fitted crank wipers and solid (and louvered) windage trays in many of their drag race oil pans. In their place, a special expanded metal, Teflon-coated, uni-directional screen if fitted to the passenger side kickout. This special screen features openings shapped like tiny wipers. Oil is directed through the openings, but it can't return through the screen to hammer the rotating crankshaft assembly. This screen used covers the full length of the kickout, but covers slightly more than half of the pan ahead of the sump. Research by Stef's has determined that a low pressure area in the kickout is formed by the spinning crank. This low pressure area (which is covered by the screen) literally sucks the oil from the rotating mass, so there's no need for an added crankshaft scraper. On the driver's side of the pan there is no screen or windage tray because this area sees little if any oil turbulence, and is in effect a high pressure area in the sump. .

Moroso sells that unidirectional perforated material. It works well on the Boss Bird.

Billet Fabrications oil pan........just saying!

Back in the day, John Clegg and I fabricated what we called a "bustle" oil pan with a semi-circular extension as close to the pan rail on the P-side as we could make it. This had the advantages of:
1) 20HP on an engine dyno. 2) Fit without modifying the X-member. It's purpose was like described above on the Stef's pan, i.e. it got the oil away from the rotating crank for less parasitic loss. Make sure you baffle and trap door the sump for drag racing. P.S. there were lots of "tricks" in those record setting 455SD 'Birds back then. This is the first time I believe that I have mentioned this one. Most here are probably familiar with the "Rocket Box", 3-link rear suspension and some of the other tricks though. |

This thread is about modifying a pan to be just like one on the high end racing pans. To look like AND operate just like the high dollar ones..
George, I am a fabricator, thought you were too. I I wanted to make a thread about which pan to just go out and buy, I would. I try and make threads where people can learn things, get useful information. Thank you JS, Steve C, Jack G and now Craig H. Those pics JS posted are extremely helpful as it relates to what I want to do. Now combine that with Jacks, Steve's and Craig's info and you will really have a great Pontiac drag race pan for a A body. I have some 2"x 13/16" and 3"x 1 1/8" weld on hinges. Would those make good "trap doors" . It seems its about making some room on the passenger side for the oil, keeping it from blasting back up on the crank at launch and keeping it off with the one way screen ? Thoughts, thanks for the help. |

Well Dragncar, NOW we can talk about modifying a Pontiac Oil Pan for your engine.
Craig H, as you mentioned, had not heard about the "bustle" oil pan with a semi-circular extension as close to the pan rail on the P-side as we could make it." Could you post some pics of it for Dragncar and the board? Merry Christmas, Craig. Tom V.

BTW, John & I chose the "bustle" because the stock full-length windage tray tended to direct the crank throw-off oil out the slots on the P-side, where it was captured by the "bustle" and redirected in a curved 180-deg fashion down into the pan.. The dyno and strip don't lie, so this mod worked. Personally, I don't see what an enlarged or deepened sump is going to do for recapturing lost parasitic HP. Of course, they give more oil capacity. I did burn a couple of rod bearings with this new pan until I reconfigured the baffling and doors. The problem was that on a hard stop either after a burnout or through the lights at the big end would throw the sump oil forward and away from the pump pickup. It seems Canton does not make the Bob Maxi Pontiac oil pan with kickout under passenger side, built in windage tray and trap doors anymore.
Steffs makes one for a stock frame with all that out of aluminum. 800$, thought it would be worse. Might go that route. |

So you started a thread about this 3 years ago and never made it?
