Default Wheels

If my 69 had no option for the wheels, they should have come with the poverty caps, what would the codes be for the wheels. Not sure if there is a date code for them. My car was built Dec 1968. Thanks, Marc.

They will have a two letter code, a date, and a mark for the manufacturer.

Here is an example of a 68 steel wheel codes and location.

Two different manufacturers supplied the wheels ... Michigan Wheel? ( MI ) . Kelsey Hays (K)
Code location might be a bit different for Kelsey wheels than seen in the photo. Some wheels also have addition stampings inside (under the tire).

And, they were manufactured differently by each company. Fit and function was the same, but on a Dog Dish car the part of the wheel manufactured differently shows, so if you are concerned about that kind of thing you can't mix K and M wheels on the same car ..... well, for sure not on the same SIDE of the same car

By the way ... I still need two wheels coded as seen in the photos below if anyone has them. Plain steels, must be MI factory, HG code, April, May, June 68 date.

M1 = Motor Wheel Corp. (Electrofuse)
K1 = Kelsey Hayes

1968 HG = GTO
1968 HF = GTO Disc Brakes
1969 HF = A-body All V8

Since your handle is Bluejudge I'll just point out that if your car is a judge it would have Rally wheels as standard so no wheel option appears on the PHS, otherwise the basic steel wheel is standard on all A bodies that year. However if a car was ordered without optional wheelcovers the basic wheels could be black or body color, depends on what your lower body color is?

Yes North, I do have a 70 Judge. But the standard wheels are for my 69 GTO conv. I am trying to catch up to your fleet. LOL , so I guess the 69 standard wheels are code HF. The color for my 69 Conv. Is Liberty blue and my 70 Judge is Atoll blue. Thanks, guys.

The color chart for '69 shows which colors were also wheel colors. If your car was one of those colors it would have matching wheels. Some have said that you could also get them on a complimentary color as well, although I don't know if this was true for '69. Otherwise the wheels would have been black.

I've always wondered what made them pick those 4 colors for wheel colors? Why bother too? added expense and complexity added to production planning with no revenue added. I wonder what was the last year for colored steelies?

I never could figure it out ... in 68 an April Gold GTO would have matching wheels, a Verdora Green GTO would have black wheels.

What about this one:

Technically 'incorrect' with wheels matching the paint but would not look right with black wheels.

I don’t know if the lighting but that really doesn’t look like Mayfair. Much closer to goldenrod. Mayfair is a very pale yellow like butter.
