Default Distributor help?

Hello guys,’
My 400 is currently at the builders, stroker with roller cam/rockers. I’m running dual AFB’s on top Offy 5499 intake and can’t run Large HEi
I’d rather not run a box like MSD etc. so it’ll look more period correct.
It will be street driven only
Auto Tranny
I need a small cap distributor

Thank you

I think that pretty much limits you to stuff like ready to run distributors, the mallory unilite and either a factory points distributor, or one that has been converted.

I'm sure more people will chime in. Though if you're looking for a period correct look, the converted points distributor is probably the way to go.

I'm currently looking at Dave's small bodied HEI's. He modifies a distributor you send him along with your engine specs. Uses GM components so in case something fails you can get parts locally. Someone here also says there is a company called Performance Distributor that does that also. Need to keep a small cap for my application as well.

I have a Pertronix in one of my GTO's and a 1977 HEI in the other. Going to convert both to Pertronix. It is easier to get a bigger advance on an original distributor than the HEI. It can be done with the HEI, but the Pertronix conversion, with a good combination of weights and springs can give you the ability to set the initial timing in the proper range and take advantage of a nice advance curve like our cars like.

here's another recent thread worth looking over;
I'd primarily point out the 3rd and fourth pages.

I know others have had no problem but every Pertronix I have ever had had this neat little feature where it liked to cut off for the hell of it. Really a whole lot of fun when you are making a turn in a busy intersection. Before it blew up I was running the Summit ready to run in my 326. It worked great and was obviously a MSD unit only it had vacuum advance. It seemed to be a quality piece. I only drove the car a year before the 326 let go but I drove the wheels off of it and it started and ran great. Would start with just the flick of a key. The Summit RTR is reasonably priced too.

I have never used a Pertonix dist.I have always had my stock dist done by a professional,rebuilding and installing and recurving the pertronix unit.I have been using them for 20 plus years without one issue.I have them in all 3 of my cars at this time.Only thing that I have found while on the dyno is they seem to have a builtin rev limiter at 6700?The Dave SB HEI also was a no issue unit.Tom

Doesn't MSD make a small body distributor for a Pontiac?, that doesn't need a box to run it???
