71 GTO dash bezel
Any advice on restoring a 71 GTO dash bezel? I have a very nice one but the chrome is lightly worn off and the burled wood grain is perfect.

I have used a paint pen around the chrome areas. Not concourse but looks ok

I have had someone tell me they had a guy carefully remove and reuse the wood grain. Not sure if I would trust someone to do that.

Jeff had an nos one that he sent me pics of just to tease me but it wasn't even perfect. I don't think there is such an item. Was looking into chrome paint. Any other ideas?

Darrell,
I’m not sure at what level you are aiming for but there is nothing that looks like the factory chrome. The Repops are too shiny and the woodgrain sucks as well in my opinion and the pens and paint aren’t even close. If it’s a nice part to begin with just use it for now.

Shooting for a concours level but I may have to take a 1 point hit.

Darrell,
I've had two '70 bezels restored a few years ago. I was able to remove the wood grain insert by carefully using mineral spirits to release the adhesive. I use a syringe to inject the mineral spirit between the bezel and wood grain insert. Let the mineral sprits sit for a few minutes and begin the removal process. Don't get in a hurry and let the mineral sprits work the adhesive loose. Start at the bottom around the steering column cut out and work your way towards the top. The bottom where the wood grain wraps down has the most adhesive, take your time there and the rest will come off easier. Rob |

Chrome pinstripe tape FTW. If you buy the dual stripe, the narrower stripe is skinny enough to fit right on the bezel edge. Do the seam above the steering solumn out of site.
