Before you buy, make sure it is tested. I have purchased quite a few NOS headlamp bulbs. About 50 percent smoked upon the initial powering up. Apparently, 40-50 years of non use is hard on the filament.

Sounds more like an electrical issue than a sealed beam issue when you blow that many.

It makes sense, actually.

The only reason the filament doesn't normally burn is that there is either a partial vacuum (normal incandescent) or an inert gas (halogen, xenon, etc.) in the bulb. So no oxygen to allow the filament to burn.

40 years is a long time for air to leak in and the vacuum or inert gas to get diluted. Then, just add current and >FOOF<

Maybe not that old
Back when the T3 gold rush happened...It wasn't long before everyone and their uncle had new nos T3's for sale.
The cheap repop counterfeit thing isn't new. Read an article in a street rodder magazine about it some thirty years ago. Some sold nos (box and all) and at the bottom of the add, in very fine print, the add said "for display only".

And those are on Ebay all the time. Sold in sets of 4 for around $200.00. When someone sees someone else selling a rare NOS part(s) all the time common sense should tell you they are scammers and those are not an NOS part. But then, there isn't a lot of common sense going around in the collector car hobby, only money.

Interesting, I've had one sitting in a cabinet for at least 25+ years . It came off my '70 TA when one blew out. I replaced both from a auto parts store with generic bulbs and kept the one I have now. Never gave a thought about value.

Thank you for an intelligent response. Wish more members around here would put some thought into their responses, instead of saying that your equipment was faulty..

Probably depends a lot on where they were kept and the climate. 40 years in a damp New England garage with temps from -20 to 90 degrees about a 1000 times will probably do in any bulb with even the tiniest flaw in it's sealing. When a bulb immediately goes poof it's almost always like GLHS said, loss of vacuum.

Im not trying to hijack the thread but I need a 3 prong one also. I purchased 4 used bulbs, 2 didn’t work on low beam and 1 smoked. Once MUSCAL finds one I need one that’s tested and working.
