Tri-Power unit, 1966 WV (616)
I finally coupled the Calif. version A.I.R. Tri-Power with the “specific” smog air cleaner unit.
Very interesting breast, and complicated. Chris.

Hi Chris. That is a very impressive set up you have. Right down to the spark arrestor screens!!!! BUT it sure is ugly!!!!!!!!!!

Very cool to see. Thanks for posting the pix. Bill, I prefer to think of it as a very elegant design solution. I think it is beautiful to look at. Chris, if this is just for display, it would be sweet if you set it up for the auto trans version with the vacuum secondaries. Nobody likes that set up but IMO it adds to the visual "interest". So many different things functioning in unison, every detail, such as the flame arrestor screens, adding to the whole. Thanks for posting. |

Besides, the plumbing of the “Vacuum unit” would not work with the plumbing of the “A.I.R. unit”. Chris.

Chris, shows what i know about the '66. I take it A.I.R. was only needed for the Man Trans Tripower? Or was the Auto Trans Tripower unavailable in Calif? Interesting bit of '66 trivia.

Both, Automatic and Manual transmission Tri-Power GTO’s were available in California. The manual trans cars “sold new” in Ca. received the (616), A.I.R. The automatic trans cars “sold new” in Ca. only received the (614), special air cleaners. The key word “most” in the description shown in the 1966 Tempest Chassis shop manual. Most, meaning 326 and 389 (manual and automatic) received the complete Smog equipment. The ”Tri-Power Automatic” did not for all 50 states. The one in my signature below is an example. Built and “sold new” in California. I have never seen a specific document stating the reasoning behind this, but I assume it’s because the Automatic with the 3x2’s burned more efficiently than the Manual trans cars, therefore did not need the exhaust gases treated. Two samples below showing the YR (Tri-Power with Automatic) with code 614. Both cars were “sold new” in Ca. Chris.

Chris, I assume Cal required some sort of certification testing. I wonder if the Auto Trans Tripower got by because the end carbs never opened during the specified testing while the progressive mechanical linkage used on the Man Trans Tripower caused the end carbs to partially open, resulting in more HC?
Would be cool to learn what the test protocol was. If WOT was not required, I'm thinking the vac secondaries never pulled open. Perhaps the test was at some steady rpm. That would explain a difference in end carb opening between the two engines. Since the cam was same in both, I can't think of any real difference between the two engines unless it had to do with distributor timing. Don't know if that differed. But I think the end carb opening difference would make sense. |

Interesting CA Smog Tech Letter
Letter to original owner of my '66 CA Tri Power 4-speed car. He said that the "modification" included the addition of the screens onto the carburetor inlets.

Awesome document! This letter coincides with post #13 talking about the “flame arresters”. I hope your 66 wears these screens. Thanks for sharing. Chris.

1964 GTO oil filler caps. One year only. Caps were always on the RH side (passenger). As already mentioned the 64 “sealed“ oil cap (614) was a small chrome AC push on style. A much different style 64 oil filler cap was the Standard version. This cap was also a push on chrome AC cap with a couple unique features. There were “No” dimples around the outer rim and it had “trapezoid” bottom vents. 1965 had a completely different design. Chris.

Flame Arrestor Screens
Hello, I have a 1965 California built GTO with tri-power and option 614. Does anyone have a set of the flame arrestor screens for sale, or know a source I could contact? As always, thanks in advance for any and all help, John

The 1966 #614 option
It’s been almost 10 years that this thread was started discussing the early emissions on the GTO in the state of California.
I’m going to speak more about the 1966 GTO factory equipped 3x2 BBL. with Automatic (YR) that was sold New in the state of California that required the #614 option. For reasons unknown to me these YR cars were exempt from the A.I.R. “Smog” system. Over the decades I have seen about a dozen ‘66 YR cars in various conditions. I presently have folders on 8 of these cars as a new one just surfaced on an auction site. I only know of two 1966 YR’s built with the #614 and they came out of the Fremont plant. Below are these two cars with their POP. The codes are very interesting. My research on several Fremont POP shows a number 4 indicates Rally I wheels which shows on both of these cars.

1966 CA GTOs
That is consistent with the 4-speed CA Smog Protect-O-Plate info as well. Nice info. Chris!
