Hey everybody, is anybody reproducing a trunk pan for a 74 Ventura? I need one. Happy holidays to everybody. Thanks Steve

Are they different than 68-72?

Last I checked, no one reproduces the 73-74 trunk pan in any manner. They are totally different from the 68-72 (which is available in a 3 piece or a 1 piece complete panel). Matter of fact, the only thing the two have in common is the width between the frame rails.
68-72 X bodies gas filler neck go thru the bumper, not thru the rear tail panel like the 73-74. 68-72 X bodies have a flat trunk floor, the 73-74 has an actual "well" that the spare tire fits in. &3-74's also have a different fuel tank for that reason and also the placement of the filler neck. Those are the 2 main differences. Now, you can convert a 73-74 to a 68-72 floor pan but I would only suggest doing so if you are using a fuel cell after a mini tub and you are good at fabricating. If you want some picts of this process let me know and I have a couple I'll post.

How close are the 75 to 79, X-body cars? Thanks Steve

That, I am not that sure of. Its possible it might work as a patch panel. Best way to tell is see if a replacement gas tank for a 75-79 is the same for a 73-74. They both need to tuck up and conform to the trunk pan.

Do you want minitub pics or Trunk pan pics? For the mini tub, I used Detroit Speeds tubs and frame ties. They were more expensive than others but quality of the parts and installation process makes its worth spending the extra cash. And I still preach you could back half 2 cars to one mini tub done right!!!

At ponjohn's request, here are some of the photo's from when I converted my trunk pan from the 73/74 to a 68-72 after a mini-tub.

Thats pretty much all the picts I had. Once you cut the old pan out, the worse part is fabbing the original area in the back panel where the filler neck goes thru the tank to blend into the "flat floor" of the 68-72 pan.

And obviously I'm not using a stock tank from a 68-72. I guess if you were planning on doing that, you would have to create a "hybrid" style tank with a special filler neck and handle the area in the trunk panel where the filler neck has a provision made in the stamping of the trunk pan which differs between the 2 year breaks with these cars. I used a fuel cell so it wasn't an issue i had to deal with. And if you mini tub, you can't use your stock tanks anyway without either having it shortened or you spend the money for a new tank built for the 2" inset of the rear springs.

Thanks Rob.
I had a 71 that was mini-tubbed. I had the tank narrowed a few inches on each side. The tank was reduced to 10 gallons. Much cleaner with the older trunk floor. Good time to put in a shock crossmember. |

Rob, is this panel a factory 73/74 panel ( I understand it may be new).

No. that panel is part of the 3 panels you get with the 68-72 trunk pan kit (2 panels for that area, left and right side, and the center pan/floor panel). You could probably use it for patch repair on a 73-74 trunk.
