The factory availability of the D80 rear spoiler from the late winter of '71 on, was a direct result of the discontinuance of the Judge option in late Feb of '71. Similar deal with the introduction of the T41 styling option.

Numerous factory built GT-37's, LeMans Sports, & GTO's were ordered & received the D80 rear spoiler, nothing special about who you knew, it just came down to the option being available at a certain time & the salesman or dealer principal knowing it was available. The '71 Pontiac A-body Assembly manual shows a date of 3/23/71 as the D80 option being avail on GTO convertibles, odd as several of us have figured out that the '71 GTO convert line was no more by that date. Also odd, that there is no notation of the new availability of the D80 option on GT-37's, LeMans Sport converts, or GTO hardtops, but when one starts charting the VIN's & the body build dates, experience will show examples of such assembly line equipped D80 option cars being built from March of '71 up into the end of '71 production.

i agree on the spoiler, it was an rpo but i was talking about things that werent supposed to be, but got done anyway.

i cant tell you how many "know it alls" have told me you couldnt get cars with spoilers that werent judges.

Gary, that Orbit Orange 71 has to be a pretty special car. I seem to recall seeing a thread some time back about there being a 71 with special order paint in OO. Must have forgotten that you had it. Got any photos of it? What color stripes and interior?

Vintage Vehicle Services (formerly GM of Canada docs) gets a bit wordy when they describe options sometimes. 'SPOILER' would have sufficed as the splitter valance with cut-outs was standard on GTOs.

Possibly the same car? Anybody know the VIN of this Mecum car? That'd be an aggressive restoration timeline, under a year. Docs I have don't list power trunk though...

Here it is. Last 71 Judge made. It was at MCACN in Nov

I think they built a GTO instead of The Judge. He complained enough and got The Judge built. Dealership was probably suppose to paint the Endura when the special paint came and they used the black stripes because of the bumper color.

Did you ever post your PHS of the OO GTO?
Edit: Actually, it looks like yours was built after The Judge.

I did indeed, that's why I posted the question as to whether anybody who was there got the VIN so I could match (or not match) it to my Canadian docs for the car.

The OO Judge at MCACN had a body tag build date code of 4A. The Lucerne Blue GTO which is the subject of this thread had a 4D code which puts it after the last Judge. But as posted by others in this thread, it was like it was ordered to be a Judge - just after the cut-off date. Hence the title of this thread.

Starlight, I noticed that the PHS on the car you posted about shows a ship date of 5/21/71 and the Pontiac Canada docs show ship date of June 1, 71. Really would be nice to see the PHS on the car at the Mecum auction...I think they are the same car!
