I have mine but it’s a little worse for the wear. Is it absolutely essential. Mine wasn’t even screwed down when I got the car.

I found this on Scott Tiemann's web site. I imagine it is probably correct, knowing his reputation for proper restorations.

I did mine yellow zinc, but clear zinc
like the Tiemann picture would be OK, too.

For 1964
I believe all of these Fuel Tank Filler Grommet Retainers (brackets) would have been provided with gold iridite over silver cadmium. While the layer of silver cadmium (not zinc) is typically always present, the ability of the gold iridite coating to survive the elements is not as good. Whenever I have found gold on this bracket, it is normally on the somewhat protected underside. Sometime during the life of the bracket shown below, and most likely during the initial factory installation, the rubber grommet was pinched and never properly seated. This rolled portion of the grommet formed a tight bond, protecting the gold iridite from the elements. Photo 1 shows the fine line of gold surviving under the protected area (5:00). Photo 2 shows the reverse side that benefited from this same protection (12:00). All three photos show the general condition of this bracket, removed from a car with 30 K+ miles. As can be seen, the cadmium coating remains prominent over most of the bracket, but not so for the iridite, even with the low mileage noted. This bracket is the only one that I have ever noted to have the gold iridite surviving on the top side (thanks to the pinched grommet). Typically if the iridite even survives, it is found on the reverse side. |
