Last Thursday my grandson and I went out to the lake house to do a few things and on the way back as we were leaving the lake road and turning onto the county road that runs along a pasture on the south side, we say a buck running flat out, up from a row of trees across the open pasture toward the road. He had already cleared the cross fence which is about 100 yards into the pasture and then over the fence along the road. I had slowed down to watch the whole thing unfold and just behind the buck were 2 does and then a spike buck maybe 20 yards back. They glided over the fence with graceful ease and disappeared into the woods on the other side. I estimate it took them maybe 4 or 5 seconds to cover the 100 yard stretch of open pasture before clearing the fence. Not sure what spooked them but they were covering some ground!

Yeah I've seen that too. My grandfather and I were for to my great aunt's house back when I was a kid in the 60s and a buck was running flat out towards the road we on. Grandpa slowed down but don't you know that buck, trying to clear the road, jumped right into the side of his 57 Ford wagon and caved in the right rear door. He sure tasted good. LOL

Another time years later, in the 70s, I was hunting in the Southern Tier of NY up on top of a small mountain along RT 8 at the intersection of RT 7 in Sidney, NY. Up on top I spooked several deer in a dense thicket of brush about 8 to 9 feet tall. They took off and I could see them jumping up thru it going like a bat out of hell. Was fun to watch seeing there wasn't a buck with them... just does. They sure can hightail it out of anything in their way. No possible way for a shot.

It's also the same day I walked up on the biggest buck I've ever seen in my life. He was in another spot on the trail heading back down and scared the crap out of both of us. Stupid mistake I know but I couldn't have gotten a shot off anyway as all I saw was his head and butt. He was standing behind a huge oak tree. He had to have had a 12 or 14 point rack. He just melted in the brush faster than I could get the shotgun up for a shot. Many had tried to get him over the years but they said he was just too smart.

Last weekend I saw something I had never. In deep woods, predominately a larch forest, tall trees. Gliding a few feet off the forest floor, was a huge eagle, 6 foot wing span I guess. Wings barely moving, it was cruising, It flew off through the forest, gaining altitude, then disappeared from view. Have seen raptors in flight, but never in the woods low like that. Also was the closest I have ever been to one. They are big!

Then later spooked a bunch of Grouse right around a bend on trail, we all freaked out with huge commotion 2 feet away.

Then saw another first, a Western Tanager. They are colored like a parrot or something tropical. Black wings, yellow body, bright orange red chest and head (Buccaneer Red, ha).

That’s why I put one of these on my truck when I bought it. I live in an area known to be thick with deer. 1/2 the vehicles in my parking lot at work are smashed from hitting deer.

Yea, the deer population in our area is really high. North central Florida is mostly a bunch of small towns and a lot of timber land and cover in and around all the towns. We see deer all times of the day and night when coming in from the lake. My son hit one a few years back that really messed up the front end of his Cougar. The kid next door to our lake house hit a big doe while riding his motorcycle on the same county road just up from the lake; he was hurt pretty bad but survived and except for the scars where skin was removed from his body you wouldn't know anything had happened.

Mike, my brother lives on a salt marsh just off the South Newport River. Each season he basically walks out of the house and goes maybe 50 yards to one of his blinds. Always has venison in the freezer; in the winter when we go up to visit the venison/beef chili is to die for. Those pics you put up are impressive.

Ive see tons of deer this year in lower Upstate NY. I think it's because it was a mild winter we had last year. Bear are also all over, the place.

Tons of deer in my area as well. I am working on a large farm that abuts a VA hospital with lots of acreage, mostly wooded. Hardly a day goes by that we dont see a few running around.

I usually have 8-12 in my yard every year. The past few years there has been a few 10 pointers as well.

I have 5 acres heavily wooded, but I am also in a development of similar sized lots. We have on occasion seen a deer in the woods but not too often. Ironically enough though, quite a few years ago on Thanksgiving morning a wild turkey came right up to our back porch!

LOL! Every now and then I'll see a conga line of turkeys going through my yard.

This is CRAZY! It has been a few years since I have seen a deer in my yard. I looked out of the window at lunch time and not more than 20yds away was a doe walking through the trees next to my house! Maybe we should have brought up a thread about lottery numbers
