Homade Spacers
I made some homemade spacers over the years that anyone with a drill press can make. Thought I would share, people have some time on their hands and some have a drill press.
This one is a 2 piece I made to convert a 4500 intake back to a 4150 thats only 1" thick. Its simply made from 1/2" thick x 6" wide aluminum bar stock. To cut the large square hole I used a hole saw in the corners to get the right radius. And cut the rest out with a jig saw and blended with a bur then sand roll. The bottom piece needs to use 5/16 allen head bolts, just use a larger drill bit to recess them. The 4500 studs come VERY close to the edges on 6" stock but will work. These plates were sheared from where I bought them so the edges are rough. I used 1/4" allens, countersunk to hold the top down. This works great, you can see where it got away from me and made some gouges but they do now effect anything. I have run my best ETs with this spacer, it has a 4150 4 hole Super Sucker on top Its blended to a Warrior, thats why the edges are not fully radius-ed on the bottom since Warrior's have small plenums. I use a standard 4150 open gasket between the plates. |

The green plastic one was made from some 1" thick molly I got from work. It was scrap, you can see where someone used it for backing with a gasket punch. I did this 10 years ago, sort of my own Super Sucker. Its pictured next to a real Dale Cubic one I just bought. Not too far off I think. I did scoop it out too much in the center "cross" area maybe.
The aluminum spacers , one on the right is a store bought open 1" aluminum spacer. The one next to it I made form 1" bar stock. It was cut with a saw from the shop where I bought it so it looks better than the first 2 piece one. It is a exact copy of the Warrior plenum. Used a hole saw, drill press and hard air grinder. They are not that hard to do really. The plastic is good because it insulates the carb from heat so I like that. But it does sort of "smear" when working with it though. Hard to make look nice. |

Cool deal on thw 4500 to 4150 adaptor. The shortest one i have seen available is 1-1/2" .

Here is what I am dealing with right now. I have a Victor 4500, that used to be a 4150. Wilcox did the work, turned out really nice. But being a converted intake the opening is not totally "square" like a true 4500 Victor. You can see the difference with the store bought plain open spacer sitting on top of the intake. It should perfectly match, or close to it. If you look at the pick with the Dale Cubic Super Sucker on it there is that edge sticking out on the sides of the intake.
That will be a issue. I need to make a spacer to match or have one made. I think the previous owner had Dave make a wood Super Sucker type spacer that fits the intake exactly so I will get a hold of him first. But this intake will be great for what I am doing right now. 461 with all the good stuff. 359cfm High Ports, Ross, Scat forged crank, Crower billet rods, splayed billet caps and a big Super Stock solid roller and a worked 1050 on top. |

My 4500 victor had a similar issue. Its the remaining curve or shape from the clover cast into the intake. I used some Dykem and marked exactly where the tapered spacer covered. Then blended the intake to match the spacer.

I'm having John Marcella convert my CV-1 4500 Dominator intake over to fuel injection and he's removing the "cloverleaf" protrusion in it to clear the super sucker spacer and my throttle body.

This is a store bought cast 4 hole spacer I cut up with a jig saw and blended with hand grinder. The idea was to put it on top of a RPM intake so I did not have to cut that slot so many guys do in that intake. I might have made the slot a little big but it worked well.
I ran 12 flat back then with unported 96 heads on the 455. Did it while I was waiting for my HOs to be set up for solid roller and ported from Whittmore. |

Whatever you end up with, you know it will be VERY nice coming from that guy.

My Warrior just got back from Wilcox. He did not do anything to it. Modifying the plenum would have cost more than buying the Victor I purchased. I could have spent all that money and only had one intake good for one application. Now still I have my good ol Warrior that has worked so well for me. Dave said you can see haw it would work great with iron heads.
This intake was originally a 4150 intake that I converted myself. I did it with no welding and anyone can convert a 4150 intake to 4500 doing it this way. If you look close at the carb bolt holes you can see they intersect. What I did was take a 5/16 piece of aluminum round stock and run a 5/16 coarse die down it making a crude aluminum bolt. Then JB welded them in the 4150 holes. Ground it flat the next day and carefully transfer punch the 4500 marks and drill out in a drill press 1/4". You need to make sure everything is square. I used a piece of cardboard from a box, that I made sure it was a perfect 90 deg(they all are) to check that the drill bit and carb surface were square to each other. I did not have one of those small machinist squares so I made my own. Then I blended the rest with grinder. That was a lot of work, but it ended up nice. There is a pic with the 1" spacer I made to fit the Warriors weird plenum. I made 2 of them, one with a nipple for the power brakes. If anyone has a pic of a modified Warrior plenum they want to share I would like to see it. I want to know exactly what they do to these things. |

That is a pretty good manifold if you're looking to make around 1050 HP or less.

I started a thread on spacers and intake work that anyone can do at home. That is all it was about. You came along being a wise guy and put up unhelpful pics of covered intakes trying to start something. You are your group just want all the attention. We all know it. |

You sure are sensitive one! All my intakes were done at home!
I was running 10's with iron heads back in 94 or so weighing 3960 lbs. with full exhaust and turbo mufflers.... Nines on spray. What's your ole' War Dog weigh? Btw.... I was going to bring a car one HELLUVA lot faster than 10.8's ( another thing you are wrong about) to race AQ. He just talked and had no interest in actually racing. Not sure why you brought his name up. I understand why you don't like nitrous... If I ever windowed a block and only ran 10.8 with it.... I'd be sour towards it also. That intake is better than anyone you have ever done or will do. You still have not gave us a flow sheet for you 1000+HP E heads, dyno slip or track results. STILL !

People actually pay money for that ? Can you not see the difference in workmanship. That pic of the intake I posted was a 2500$ intake. Cut in half to do the work. Weights almost nothing now. Its work of art. Yours look like it was made in some hacks garage.

You could hit that manifold with a hundred shot of spray and still come up short on power comparing it to mine... Again it's a great manifold but limited to a 1050 or so.
