Casting 9799914 YS Block. RA3 or Not?
A local guy has a 9799914 YS block that he says is a RA3 engine.
I come up with: 1970 400cid 350HP YS Auto 10.0scr 067 cam 13 heads Block Casting 9799914 Wallace shows that this casting number is a 1970 block and the same casting was used for RA engines, but they were WS & YZ codes. I've also read that the RA3 blocks were all 4 bolt main vs 2 bolt on the non-RA blocks. I haven't looked at the block yet so I can't verify any of the numbers or if it's 2 or 4 bolt. So what's a core like this worth? Block, crank, mains, 4X heads, & some misc parts....

It is not a RA block.
It probably is drilled for 4 bolt caps but will probably have 2 bolt caps. Technically the blocks are the same, but the internal parts are different along with heads.

it's a bread and butter 1970 400/4bbl/auto engine;
it holds no discernible premium over any other non-557 400 block - unless a person is wanting a 1970 block for their vehicle. It seems like most everyone these days list all 1970 blocks as being "Ram Air III"... sheesh; I have taken static for trying to politely tells someone precisely what they have. I now try to always take this approach:

"Technically the blocks are the same, but the internal parts are different along with heads."
Having owned both, I agree it is same block with the 3 middle Main bearing caps being 4 bolt. This same "914" Block was also used to "make" a "915 block" ( RAIV) Engine plant ground off the "4" and stamped in a 5. Same block casting used to make 3 engines. Not really a big deal for Pontiac since Block size was consistent. I know a guy with a YS engine block for sale. He said the block was used by Pontiac to make ram air blocks, he never said that it is a ram air engine, anybody knows what a YS is. ( One I saw for sale recently) A YS block will sell for what its worth. This is a non subject .. |

So did all of the RA3 blocks (YZ & WS) come with 4 bolt mains?

my understanding is that for 1970, YES.
But(!) There is always an exception to the rule - as such, I have understood SOME YZ engines were built with two bolt mains, but those are the exception, and far from the norm.

I have never seen a true 1970 YZ or WS with 2-bolt mains.
I had a late 1969 YZ block with a 1969 VIN stamped into it, with only two motor mount holes, that was 4-bolt main. I was surprised but pleased to see the extra bolts. I have seen 1970 WT blocks with 4-bolt mains (estimate about 1/4 in all my years) but most are 2-bolt mains. The earlier in the production year, the more likely it is to have 4-bolt mains. Over the years, I've found a few 455s that shouldn't have been 4-bolt mains (with 4-bolt caps) but were. I'm not sure why, but it happened more in 1970. Mike |

I have yet to pop off my 'WT' engine's oil pan; I would be crying in my soup if it's a two bolt main, but it would sure be a nice perk if it was a four bolt main!

So it ended up being a virgin YS 2 bolt block. He was under the impression that the ys was a RA engine.
I ended up getting it to add to the collection. Its definitely better than any of the 557 blocks I have laying around & should make a good stroker engine one day. Thanks for all the input guys!

Need help with locating a 1970 Pontiac 400 block...
Recently picked up an early (Van Nuys) Lucerne Blue 1970 T/A 4 spd. missing it's engine. Looking for a short block with casting 9799914 with a date code of A,B,C,D. If you have one, please let me know. While it won't be matching number, it would be nice to put the correct block in her. I realize a WS is correct for this T/A but I figured it might be near impossible to find one. Willing to pay for the right block. Preferably one that hasn't been rebuilt or had water down it.
