68-72 Core Support
People selling the reproduction 68-72 GTO core support should make buyers aware that besides the modifications necessary for a 68, that the support has to be totally reworked to fit.
The top plate and the bottom rail on the reproduction are parallel, on the OEM piece the support tilts 9-10 degrees forward with the bottom rail being horizontal and the top plate 9-10 degrees off horizontal. To fix this requires drilling the welds and removing the bottom rail and rewelding it to achieve the proper tilt of the core support. Rewelding requires additional metal to be added to fill the gap left at the bottom after positioning it correctly. Image below is from the 69 assembly manual that shows the proper lean angle. On the reproduction the bottom rail (point BD) and the top plate (point BC) are both exactly horizontal. This is a major flaw and this item should not be sold without the buyer knowing it will require extensive work to fit properly. |

So I am guessing the same would apply to a 70? Wondering if it might be better just to replace the typical rust under the battery tray.

Typical rust is at the 2 lower mounts.

There are patch panels available for the lower mounts. Bought mine from Inline Tube.

There is a few more issues with these POS. patch panels.
The holes for the clips to hold valance bolts are off. Too far to drivers side. Out 1/2 a hole. The hole for the plastic wire protector for headlight wires is too big. Need to rework. The top is not spot welded in the right place. Off about 1/2 inch to Drivers side. Found this out when aligning front fenders. Sometimes is just as much work to repair your old one if not too far gone or spend hours on these. I guess if its just a driver or race car you could just bolt it on but you won't like the alignment if your at the least bit fussy. Good thing they are fairly cheap! |

Incredible that they are still being sold and not one vendor mentions how bad they are. But then most people are probably just building drivers where they hammer and bend them into place and never know the difference.
But yes, ... way easier to fix an OEM piece if just the mounts are rusted out than to rebuild one of these disasters. |
