2nd gen IRS
I've finished installing a new independent rear suspension in a 1981 Trans Am. Tubular DOM upper and lower control arms, fabricated 9" housing with Strange HD aluminum 3rd member, 33 spline CV shafts, Corvette hub assemblies. Bilstein triple adjust coilover shocks and Wilwood Corvette brakes. Also installed tubular subframe connectors and a new front subframe. The front spindles use C5 Corvette hub assemblies. The rear will fit 335 width tires and the front 315 width. The rear suspension is all bolt in. I have just over 4" of ground clearance. The exhaust is 3" stainless and exits through factory looking splitters.

Same as installing a factory subframe. Bolt it in and take measurements to make sure it is square.

That's the old design. This one is improved.
The rear has more suspension travel, improved camber gain. easier alignment along with rear toe adjustment and the nominal ride height is adjustable. The front suspension has new spindles available with -1/2" drop or -1-3/4" drop. These utilize a newly designed C5 Corvette hub assembly that is based off the C5R. Alignment is simplified with the adjusters in the upper control arms. 315 width tires can be used in the front. 18" diameter rims are recommended. Any of the C5 or C6 Corvette brake kits can be used. The engine has been moved rearward allowing for better weight distribution. The entire 3" exhaust has been assembled to allow as much ground clearance as possible. There's just over 4" of clearance. The headers and mufflers are from StainlessWorks. Oval tubing was used under the 9" housing. The exhaust exits through Pypes original type splitters. V-band clamps were used at the headers to allow the entire exhaust to be removed easily. |
