What to do with headliners on birds equipped with optional Fisher t tops?
When I got my TA, the perforated vinyl top material had separated from the card board backing but, otherwise, seemed in good condition.
I carefully glued it back with 3m super weatherstrip adhesive. a product I have used for years on misc and have been quite happy with. I used a spreader with cloth over it to keep it flat and it looked great when I did it. However, the repair has not lasted and now looks pretty bad, wrinkled, separating, etc. So, what options does one have to have a nice looking headliner? 1 can the original be made to adhere and look good? 2 does it need to be replaced with cloth, etc? Would like your comments from those experiencing this issue. thanks

Year one had perf on a roll, $35 when I did mine, I scraped all the old foam and glue off with a single razorblade, then used 3M General Trim Adhesive spray.
A local guy wanted $350:@ the time. , it’s been over 20 years, it still looks good.

Can you get the t top headliner out in one piece with the windshield and back glass in place? hmm . it would be easier if out of the car.

It comes out in one piece after you remove all the trim, at least I had no problem on my plain top '74. Cleaning all the old foam and crust off the hardboard will be key to getting any adhesive to stick.

Removed the headliner in my '77 once all the interior trim was removed.

Be careful when handling the cardboard as it is thin(width) between the T tops and can bend/fold there.

Make certain the vendor stored and shipped it to you on a roll. I bought the perforated vinyl from NPD years ago and they shipped it folded. It had a crease that never came out. I don't know if they learned their lesson by now or not.

I used a piece of frp panel from HD/Lowes. Bought the material from Ames, came rolled up in a large box. I used 3m spray glue to hold it in place. Did the one in my 77 the same way and it is holding up great after a few years now.

that turned out very nice. i recovered my 81 t top headliner with the perforated material & 3m spray adhesive, luckily the board was still in good shape.

I bought my perf on the roll from year one. It’s a shade off, looks way better that the sprayed dipped SEM look. Others at that time folded the material to ship. It’s gotta be on a roll.

The vinyl material separates from the backing material because the foam that backs the vinyl has deteriorated over time. This is what happens with every headliner of this type eventually. The only solution is to remove the board, clean it off and install new material as shown in the pics above.
