'69 Convertible with Chevy engine on Mecum sells for $125K
https://www.mecum.com/lots/FL0122-48...m-convertible/
Looks to me like they flattened out the shapes of the tops of the fenders and quarter panels. I would think it would take a lot of metal work to do that but more than likely it's done with bondo.

Once they get into the serious resto-mod mode, the type of powerplant under the hood has little to no meaning. It could be a BBC, LS, an electric motor, or an 10 HP Briggs and Stratton, really doesn't matter to seller or buyer. It's a classic body shell covering the sellers dreams, impressions, and idea of what the "perfect" GTO is supposed to look like. Right now, very popular and bringing some crazy prices. 15 years ago, Honda Civics with the tires sticking out of all 4 wheel wells 2 feet was popular too. As were late 70's and early 80's G cars all "Donked up" with giant gold wheels, big stereos and a 305 2bbl. for power. Time will tell how these cars do in another 15 years. Some people must like these right now.

I feel like I'm missing something? I looked through the pictures and I don't see anything special about this car that would warrant the exceptional sale price. It's not a numbers matching perfect resto. Nor does it have a high power LS, pro touring suspension or big brakes. No custom built interior, other than questionable color changes.
Chalk this one up to someone with money to burn that liked the color.

What is a 709 GTO?
High end paint jobs and interior work are easy $32k +, then this engine bay is clean and mods galore. Easy $70k with labor in that car, it adds up fast. $125k is a bit more than I would've guessed but it being 1 of 2 709 convertibles (not sure the significance) is the part that bumped it up. I'm seeing anything with rarity, significant or not, is getting people thinking it's gonna be with a fortune 10+ years from now.

Never will I understand putting a chevy engine in a pontiac is acceptable, that goes for ls engines as well. If you want to run a chevy engine get a chevy car. Chevelles are great cars as well but the engine is the heart of the car. We all know there is a difference between a big block chevy and a pontiac. Resto mod any car all you want but if you have a pontiac car and are not running a pontiac engine, I feel sorry for you.

Someday I will do a video on the inefficiency and Stupidity
Of these fan shrouds. Amazing that it draws moreHP from engine than a clutch fan. And has to work harder to do the job, at 30-40 LESS Efficiency!

Found this for the 709, which didn't seem like a big deal for an option IMO.
Code 709 was intended to mean "Safe-T-Track with performance axle".

Well, you have to admit. It was the only way to get a "Big Block" into a Pontiac. To me it was a said thing to do, but hey, it was the seller's car.
A 4speed 66 GTO I saw, and this was several years ago at a Cruise night, had a Chevy engine in it. Everyone that looked at it and knew what the engine was just laughed at it and walked away. Some even said it was a "Big Block" Pontiac until they were enlightened that there never was a "Big Block" Pontiac engine produced by... Pontiac. What an argument that turned out to be.

And what over-the-top resto mod would be complete without the old rattle-can blackout grille treatment?

I can't say anything really bad about the grill. For my 66 GTO I used Eastwood's Spray Gray instead of the original Argent Silver. A lot of guys actually said they liked it better, as I do. And if needed it's easier to touch up. But... each to their own.

The actual paint job on the car was nice. The color/style was not my cup of tea. I looked at it close. It didn't light my pants on fire but that's the nice thing about the car hobby, different strokes for different folks.
