I too, would want a 455 in that car, BUT my main concern would be to get it on the road asap...which is where I think you stand.

The current condition of the valve seats would tell me whether or not to install new hardened seats. I'm a fan of hardened seats BUT yours might not be that bad..

If you use the 068 cam (Melling SPC7) it is not terribly expensive, you can use stock springs, thats a huge easy happening deal...And its a great cam for many engines, especially a 400. stock rockers will be fine with that, unless you want to step up to stamped 1.65 rockers...

I would put the 400 in, then plan on putting a 455 in eventually.

I just traded off a set of #62 heads last month, but they are easy to find under $500 a pair around here. Its easy to get sucked into chasing the perfect combo, my philosophy is the engineers that designed these didna good job so I’ll jus massage their parts a bit for my needs.

if you want to run 13.0 in the 1/4, with the 455 cid motor, I wonder what everyone thinks about the 744 cam? That one seems to get overlooked. May even need more than that to get to 13??

My 78 Clone, with 455HO block and heads, just a H-O Racing RAIV clone cam Similar to his old HC-03D I believe, TH400, Stock converter, 3.08 rears on 26" street tires was getting 2 sec 60ft times(1.99sec was my best ever), and 12.4@106mph through the lights. Or might have been 12.6@104. Also got 16MPG+ when driven smooth. I even towed a trailer to and from the strip with all our camping gear, tools etc etc with the car, It was my only driver at the time. About 140Mi each way.

My '74 has the # matching 400 stroked to 461 with # match 4x heads, performer intake, numbers matching Q-jet (Cliff), and hooker headers, mild XE268 cam (idles at 600 rpm), 3.23 rear, super T-10. I got the mph to run low 13's, but traction is a major problem with, even with the Nitto 555 255/50/17's. I feel I will break stuff like rear end and tranny if I go to slicks. I vote you stroke it

So that's a 455 HO with a RAIV cam. That's a nice upgrade. I'm a little confused about which cam that motor came with, I've read both 068 and 744?? If it came stock with a 068 then that's a pretty big change, less so if it was the 744 but still a significant. What do you think your HP is, maybe 400?

If I could find a good 455 locally that is the route I'd go, the stroker is a non-starter, $4000 into an engine right off the bat isn't what I want to spend and at that point I could do an LS swap and make more power. I'm keeping my eyes open for a different set of heads to get to 9.1 compression but if I don't have a set when re-ringing the engine starts I'll run the 4x-4 and so a swap later on down the road. The main goal is to get it back on the road and make it reliable. I like everyone's ideas because it give a guy things to think about that I hadn't looked at before.

My Dyno2000 Sim estimates 441HP@5000 498Tq@4000 I know that's a lie LOL. At least on the Tq. 041 shows, from Wallace Racing it was in the 1968L-70 RAIV Yes, the HO did not come with this cam. I am also running 87cc #64 455HO heads, which have been ported, 4.25" stroke, 4.191" Bore (.040 over) 10.4:1 comp. I was also running Rhoads lifters. This time I am going Crane cam saver lifters to try. When I originally swapped the old 041 for a Comp XE274H, the low end Tq was freaking NUTS! But she ran out of breath completely at 4800 with my combo. The 041 was more driveable in the wet down low, but pulled great to 6000. I might go back to Rhoads again, but really, I hated the way they made the idle change depending on oil temp. Hotter oil, smoother Idle. I loved the cold startup lump. I can live with that on the street. Tight 3500 stall converter, Well, was built to be 2500, but behind the 470 she flashes to 3500 LOL. The drag results I stated before were with a 1200 stall though. I ended up snapping the TH400 input shaft in 2 on a 1-2 shift. She would hammer HARD!

OK, so it's basically a 469 cid RAIV. You have a RA IV cam, HO heads and high compression. That's a great motor. Basically, it's what would have happened in 71 without emission regulations (except the 469 cid). The 400 RA IV was around 425 hp in reality. I'd say 441 HP would be easy with your combo. Probably more. Tq way higher too. Sounds like a great motor.

your 400, your 4x heads milled .060, your cast iron intake milled to match,
068 cam, ram air manifolds, 2.5 exhaust, holley sniper, you will have a great daily driver
