That PHS package it's definitely worth having for your car. It's one of the advantages of owning a Pontiac. You can find how exactly how it left the factory, the options, the dealer it went to, right down to the tires and wheels and the MSRP on the window sticker.

If 69 was anything like the 66/67 GTOs, that pedal trim is indicative of power brakes. Accelerator pedal, brake, clutch, and parking brake - all got the stainless trim. Cars with manual brakes didn't get the brightwork.

This car had a bent frame from an accident. The frame was original and the car had manual drum brakes and no power steering. Or at least that is the way it was when I got it. It did have the bright work on all pedals. When I changed the frame I bought everything to make it power steering and power brakes as well. Then rather than rebuilding the front suspension I went with CCP tubular control arms new springs etc. I did this when I restored our Chevelle and the difference in handling was amazing to say the least.

When was the first Ram Air IV built? Were there any in early 69? And is there any way to tell by vin. or data tag?

If you get the PHS, all shall be revealed...
Well, not as far as the first RAIV build date...but all regarding your car.

Have to order the PHS Invoice to get the real details.
Nope - just basic info from trim tag and VIN
First Ram4 cars were around early March 1969

I was asking the RAIV for a friend. His 69 GTO had a RAIV engine when he got it. The car was a Jan 69 car. The original engine is long gone as they raced it. He does still have the round port heads. And the car had RAIV decals on it when he bought it. Again more information than we had. The car was Bad A$$ in its day. He has pictures with at least one wheel off the ground on take off.

I guess my thought on the PHS documents is that my car can never be original again and the paper work although interesting cost in access of 100.00 and 100.00 would be better spent on parts I need to get it back on the road. I usually keep 5 to 7 cars in my collection . I don't show my cars and just want to build and enjoy them. I have some that won't see more than 20 miles a year and some that might see 200 or so. It is however nice to know a bit more information on what is right or wrong with each model. I would probably trade my 69 for a 67 as far as looks go maybe not for reputation. I personally think the 67 was the best looking GTO ever built.

Fully understand on the PHS. The last time I ordered one it was $50.

Either a YS or XH block code

Exh manifolds look good too !
Well I didn't luck out on the block. No YS or XH I got a YD (probably grandmas grocery getter ) But when I got it the block had been bored .30 over and had new flat top pistons a reground crank new bearings , oil pump and cam and timing chain. Not sure what the cam was. The 13 heads were rebuilt and looked new. All I had to do was install gaskets and finish it out. I guess the good thing is I only paid 400.00 for it. The exhaust manifolds I bought used. There supposed to be RAIII manifolds.

Where would the date code on the block be? Not sure I have seen that.

It will be cast next to the distributor hole in an alphanumeric form. The alphabet corresponds with a month followed by two digits for a day of the month and a single digit denoting the last digit of the year. A018... January 1st 1968 or it could be 1978. You would be able to determine that by other means like the two letter code.
As for the block casting number, it is cast in larger numbers along the flange where the transmission bell housing attaches. Right behind the right hand cylinder bank.

It is very hard to read but I think by the distributor is BO17 and just above the oil pressure sending unit is 9790071

The only YD code I can find for a year that ends in a 7 is a 1967 400, 265hp, 2bbl Auto. That's about the heads and cam more than anything though.
It's possible I could have missed something somewhere because the 9790071 shows up over several years including '69 I think but I don't see it for 1967.

Thank you very much for doing that. I rechecked the numbers. The only one I couldn't be sure of was the letter. It was either a B or D but the 017 is correct. With these heads and the RA I have who knows. I have a Pontiac Qjet 4bbl and the big exhaust manifolds and a full RA set up. For what I paid for this engine I think it will be just fine. Not intending to street race at my age
I will bet it is faster than I want to go.
Thanks again
Don

Maybe if it's a D (April) it may have been cast for the '68 models? 9790071 is a casting that shows up in '68. Some of the numbers guys will figure it out.

I'd check that date code again. The '7' is probably a '9'?
B019?

There were no 9790071 block castings in 1967.

Also, there is probably a partial VIN on the block, down the passenger side next to the timing cover. It will look something like this:

29A1xxxxx with the x's being numbers, The 'A' is the plant so could be a few different letters.

That's what I was thinking, that last digit is probably something other than a 7.
