OK Lifter expert! Someone must know...
GM lifters for Pontiacs had a large number of part #s.
Does anyone know the difference and are these pretty much interchangeable? Are these all Pontiac V8 lifters & does a VL49 = a VL51? GM numbers: 5232265 5232750 5231355 5231615 5232385 5234330 5234485 And lastly, does this same lifter fit most of the 65-ish & up Olds V8s and/or Buick V8'S Lots of confusion in my search for older stock Pontiac lifters.

VL49 and VL51 interchange
The top number on your GM list is a early style 58 to 66 Pontiac lifter with a smaller pushrod cup. The bottom 2 are Buick and Chevy lifters with a lower oil band. The rest of the list work on 67 and newer Pontiacs and Oldsmobiles. I don’t know what the difference’s are between those. One is probably more of a high performance lifter. Buick lifters have about the same oil-band as Chevy, but different pushrod-cup height. Not interchangeable with Olds/Pontiac. Guys are using Chevy lifters in Buicks, but they need different pushrods.
At least some Olds--Pontiac lifters interchange. But then, the oiling systems on the two engine families are remarkably similar.

Interestingly all the GM numbers that you posted are not Pontiac part numbers, at least according to my info.

Steve25, these are GM numbers, the last 2 are on the GM boxes that I have. Anyone need Buick lifters?

I am not saying they are not GM numbers, I am saying they don’t appear to be Pontiac numbers.
Here’s more info for you. Note that it has been said that original Pontiac GM lifters used in the pre 67 motors had a push rod cup area that was smaller to match these motors push rods. Why it’s said that the 71 and 72 455 manual trans motors used a different lifter I don’t know, but I have seen this same thing listed elsewhere. I think it’s a mistake and is referring to the 455 round port motors in those years, but at this point in time we may never know!
