When we dyno engines built for the pure stock drags, we make pulls with and without a base cut from a factory dual snorkel air cleaner that had damaged snorkels. Most engines respond positively with a several hp through the rpm range with the base. Its design smooths the air flow into the air horn of the carb.
I really like the '73-'76 4-bbl air cleaner design for the A&B bodies that has the single large snorkel that can be ducted to the radiator support for cold air intake. The F-bodies use the same design except has a drop base for the lower hood clearance and doesn't flow as well as the A&B base. Dennis |

As long as you don't really care, you can use a '68-72 single snorkel. In '70, the California vehicles used a '71-up style air cleaner. That underside has a hole in the bottom that will need to be plugged (from the outside, so that doesn't get sucked into the carb.).
Here is a relatively inexpensive single on eBay, just needs hole plugged. https://www.ebay.com/itm/335029417532

How does the breather connect to a 67 GTO air cleaner? I found this example of what I think is a Chevy base that has a nice solution for the breather on an open element air cleaner: Mike |

That's what the underside of my Z28 air cleaner looks like. If you have the center breather hole style valve covers like OEM, the tube points right at the filler hole. I bought a repro steel elbow and the short rubber connecting hose (also Chevy) and installed via a standard breather grommet in the valve cover. Looks like OEM and no interferences.
I don't see why you're having a problem. Just install the breather tube elbow at the 10:00 position on your aftermarket air cleaner and run a heater hose to the breather. It shouldn't interfere with anything. On the factory air cleaner housing, install the tube at 12:00 (into the sidewall not underneath) pointing towards the breather and connect with heater hose. Just cap the factory tube off or cut it off and plug from below.

Oh yeah, exactly what people were doing with the lids back in the day, heck I even saw a 74 455 Olds 88 police cruiser in the local Olds dealer's garage with the lid flipped, apparently by the dealer's mechanic.

i was under the impression that doing this disrupted the air into the carb?

The interference was between the throttle linkage and/or the accelerator pump arm and the Moroso base. Hopefully I can fix this by rotating the base and there's a way to make it clear everything. The breather comes into play because the location of the breather opening in the Moroso base did not lend itself to an easy connection...it comes off at an awkward angle. I think I tried about 3 different fittings before finding something that allowed me to connect to the valve cover with a hose. The 5/8"? hose is stiff so didn't cooperate much. I suspect I ended up letting the breather hose dictate the orientation of the base. This probably explains the interference. I like the elbow you posted and will get off my butt and go check it all out when it warms up a little. Perhaps your elbow will make it all easy. The other input from this thread is the airflow is less than great with this Moroso base plate. The originals and some of the aftermarket base plates have a large radius as mentioned. So I may just toss the Moroso and start over with something easier to line up... but I'm still trying not to spend $300 on a dual snorkel and like the open element options. Mike |

Could be, I think I've seen something from GM- but it wasn't exactly that but similar.

I scanned/speed read this discussion;
Honestly, the grossly overlooked 68-72 single snorkel air cleaner is probably the way to go. There are a myriad of single snorkel air cleaners if you decide to look beyond the 68-72 style - they typically have a longer, and smaller end/inlet on the snorkel...

they make that L-88 base without the tube also. I run one ion my IA/Camaro as I can run a 4' filter on it . Pontiac motor and a Victor sit high even with a cowl hood. I can tell you on my motor i picked up a bunch with no aircleaner or base. I am sure a base will help so figuring out a setuo to keep one in place. i have seen the SS and Stockers use some springs.
I can also tell you pulling a filter out of my Shaker base with open scoop picked it up and changed the mixture so much it lean popped out the scoop at me!

i run an open element on a 72 chevy 4x4 i use to plow snow. i have a functional exhaust heat riser valve and exhaust crossover, works great. but that is a 4150 carb and maybe the bigger primaries are less susceptible to icing vs a quadrajet.

I found the flat base is getting whacked by the accelerator pump rod and there is no way to keep it from happening by rotating my air cleaner base.
A thick gasket might provide enough clearance but sounds like a band-aid for a basically poor design. I am leaning toward replacing this base with one of the "open" style Chevy air cleaner bases that I posted earlier in the thread. |

Shiny, Here are a couple of original '67 GTO 400 H.O. air cleaners that are very similar to the Chevy's open element unit. I always loved the look of them on any engine. It's a good choice for your engine and more cost effective too.
You can see that there is a rubber plug in the pass valve cover opening and a breather cap on the driver's side. H.O.'s used the regular PCV set-up (valley cover to intake nipple) as your '70 350. Dennis |
