The ones I’ve had done they only took .003 of the cap and had no effect on The timing chain needing to be shorter. But it depends what they took off the cap, if .005 and they have to do it again then more then likely it would. Line honed or line bored. Line bored the definitely.

If any Molnar crank or rod is out of spec, not straight, tapered ect, Tom Molnar will send you a call tag so it can be shipped back, for free. Then send you a new one, FREE .
You can not ask anymore than that. Maybe someone knows of a Molnar crank/rod being having to be sent back, but I have never heard of it happening. He believes in his products and stands by them. Their regular rod is stronger than any PMD block, by far. Your block is not scrap. You can cut the caps if needed and re line bore-hone. Done right a block might not need a shorter chain. Mine did not and I have a Morse 3/4" link chain in there. Those do not come in short lengths. But there are differences in brands. I had a IWIS-Rollermnaster .004 short chain that was fairly tight. And a std. Cloyes Z chain that fit pretty well. But that Morse was tighter. You have a block with billet steel splayed caps so see it through and have fun with it. Might want to take it to a different shop if possible. |

Wrong, wrong, wrong, if its a Molnar crank its almost certainly on spec.
Its Eagle, SGI, Ohio, Galaxy, RPM cranks that are all over the place. Scat and especially Molnar are know for quality. David Vizard almost exclusively uses Scat rods and cranks. says its the norm for them to take 1000 HP ! And Molnar is a step up from Scat. |

Its a good discussion, splayed 4 bolt caps thats quite an investment, well there’s two options left, have them redo it or fine another shop that you might have more confidence in. The crank is good one less thing to worry about.

1 good thing that cam out of this, if needed? Mike has offered to get you hooked up with right chain. My friend must have bought 3-4 sets gears, chains, only to fine out he really didn’t need one..Now he has quite a collection and considers himself an expert. LOL

This is funny…just try to inject a little humor when he gets his new garage done, he’s going to start a Pontiac museum. LOL

Thank you all for the calming words. Loosing my sleep over this.
Thank you for offering timing chains. I am located in Europe, and have other machine shops around. Dont know if I dare to let the same shop get another try on this. I went with program splayed caps, Molnar crank and rods, Ross pistons. Wanting this engine to be really stout and then this happens. |

You are going to be fine. A bunch of nice parts.
Take your time, find the right shop and you will end up a very happy man. I run Program splayed caps, Molnar rods, Ross pistons and a Scat crank. If you do need a short chain Butler sells a lot of different ones. You can get a Rollermaster with nitrited gears and IWIS chain .004 short. Only one I know of. Cloyes Z might be the best. Last I heard only the std chain was a Z chain. What kind of heads and cam are you going to put in this beast ? |

Sure hope so.
Heads are ported Speedmaster. This is the camshaft, with Johnson lifters. (HR) (Std Firing Order/ Std Journals) 294/300, 242/248, .540/.563, 114LS with 1.5 ratio rockers Lift with 1.65 ratio rockers .594/.619 What is factory tollerance min Max on crankshaft journal for the 400? |

With that cam. Should make 450-480 hp. Going to be real nice combo. Can’t answer your last question on factory Tolerance.

With the right carb, intake and headers and that cam you will make well over 500 HP. So, whats the carb, intake and headers you are planning to run ? I would run those 1.65s. HH64 would be the guy to ask about those factory main tolerances. |

I have prepped the heads with spring cups and upgraded valve locks. Did not like the ones from Speedmaster. Will check coil bind also.
The crank is 4.5" stroke. Round port headers and FiTech EFI. Have not decided on intake manifold yet. |

Bet it will have a pretty smooth idle considering. So, which year/number 400 block do you have ? |

Looking forward to testing after the winter. Hopefully the cam is big enough.
Going in a 76 Trans Am 4 speed. Block number I believe is 481988. So its the strong casting. Anyone have factory crankshaft main tollerance? Cant fint it in any of my books. |

I have it available from a couple sources at work. I can post it Thursday. I work late tomorrow night and can jot them down.

For a 3” main crank the tolerance is 2.9995” +or- .0005”
Rods journals, 2.2492” + or - .0005” Stroke within .003” Index within 1 degree Drag race only bearing clearance for cast crank . Mains. .0025”- .0032” Rods .002”-.0035” Now keep in mind that a steel crank will expand a tad more then a cast crank at operating temp.
