'68 / '69 Timing Cover Differences?
Besides the obvious 8-bolt and 11-bolt water pumps for the '68 400 V8 and the '69 and later 400 V8s, are there any other differences between the '68 and '69 and later year timing covers?
The '68 uses a 4-bolt crank pulley as does the '69 and later years. Can the 4-bolt crank pullies be swapped between the '68 and '69 and later pullies? Will the water pump, power steering and A/C pullies all line up if the '68 crank pully is swapped for a '69 and later crank pulley? All answers welcome. |

There are several different pulleys and mixing them can lead to misalignment issues. The pullies can all be swapped around but besides the pullies there are different mounting brackets for the accessories which also complicates things.

Isn't there a long and short snout version of the 11 bolt water pump?

Correct, in 1969 there was a short and long version of the 11 bolt pump.

Yes, I understand that there are different mounting brackets for the alternator, but can a ‘69 crank pulley be used on a ‘68 that is using the ‘68 water pump and cover?

'68-70 Pontiac V8's (exc '70 v8 Firebirds) shared the same design crankshaft pulleys.
Water pump pulleys are a different story. The stagger (design of the wp pulley) changed between the '68 8 bolt wp pulley & the pulleys for the new for '69 model 4" hub height 11 bolt waterpump. When the '70 model A,B, G series Pontiacs we're introduced in August of '69, the 4 1/2" hub height 11 bolt water pump was introduced. As '69 V8 Firebirds continued to be assembled into Nov of 69, they continued to use the "351" casting 4" hub height 11 bolt wp & it's 69 model wp pulley. There are no early & late '69 model water pumps, all '69 Pontiac V8's were originally assembled with the short "351" casting water pump.

On my 1966 GTO i have found that 1968-70 (non-F) crank pulley, 1969-70 TC, 1970 WP and 1970 WP pulley are a perfect match to the 1966 PS and Alt. brackets.
Had to change the 1966 3/8" PS pulley to the 1970 1/2" PS pulley though. HTH |
