Tighten ball and socket inside side view mirror
I have a 76 Trans Am which came with the sport mirrors. The glass does not stay in position. It just rotates down and I’m looking at the ground. Inside the housing the glass is attached to a frame which rotates with a ball and socket. It is completely loose. Is there any way to tighten this? There aren’t any screws.

Isn’t there a screw behind the mirror?
Get a cheap one at the swap and experiment. I just saw a handful Sunday at the swap.

No screw. There is a metal backing plate riveted to a plastic frame that the mirror looks to be glued to. The backing plate is a stamping with a socket. The ball is pressed into a metal casting that gets screwed to the housing of the mirror.
I currently have it gooped up with some industrial adhesive, so it's not disassembled for pictures. Though, with the glue, it is fixed in one spot, which did not dry where I really need it. Next swap meet near me, I'll look for a good one. I might have to paint it. The car is Goldenrod Yellow. Not many of them.

replace the mirror
If it is the passenger side mirror. Replace it with a good one you can find at swap meet or ebay. Disassemble. the two screws or rivets that hold the assembly together. you can remove and replace the mirror and plastic holder from a good one. No need to paint a new one.

Great point. I already had it disassembled, so no problem swapping the good parts.
