There is absolutely no reason you can't do it yourself if you are handy with tools. Is it working and you just want it to look new? If it is you can disassemble it and have it media blasted, install new bearings and brushes and reassemble. If it is not working test the components and replace what is needed.

I have two recommendations for you, though you may have some shipping expense:

P&G Instrument
268 Islip Ave
Islip, NY 11751
(631) 581-3324

Rebuilt my alternator from my '63 recently. Fair price, quick-quick turnaround, and properly clocked.

Also:

Sailon Auto Electric, Inc
61 Richmond St
Syosset, NY 11791
(516) 921-3074
sailonae@gmail.com

Rebuilt my starter last year (also from my '63). They specialize in Delco Remy equipment.

The reason I went to P&G with my alternator was that it was a little closer (I'm sort of in the middle between the two), and I didn't have Sailon's info handy. I dropped off my alternator in the morning, made a few more stops, got home, and my phone rang. The work was done. An hour? Two?

Anyway, just a couple contacts to add to the list. Maybe we should have a sticky on these services (or perhaps we already do).

I've used this guy before. Nice thing with his rebuilds is he honors his work for life. I had a little problem with mine a number of years after the rebuild and he just had me send it in, he fixed it, and sent it back out.

Mine is needing media blast to clean up. Not sure if it works or not. Been sitting over 20 years
