My first car was a '67 Camaro 327, 3 spd car. I bought it in 1971 for $300. It was pretty rusty so I turned it into a rat rod 35 years before they were popular. Added all steel IROC style flares and Firebird 400 frontclip. It went by the name of "Half-breed". Built the 327,12-1 compression. angle plug head and muncie 4-speed. Dismantled and sold off the parts in 1980.

First car was a 67 Cougar, second was a 72 GTO. Bought the Cougar when I was 13, worked my ass off all summer and paid $450 for it. Picked up the GTO from a junkyard for $175 on my 17th birthday, drove it home with no front bumper, a severely bent hood, and only one set of headlights working. Good thing it was daylight.
Still have both of them, and a bunch of others. The Cougar is in my shop right now, just got the paint done, the headliner, front and rear glass in, and currently the door glass is the project kicking my butt. I am doing a ground up rebuild and so far the only thing I havent done myself is machine work on the engine. It was a bare shell in 06 and I hope to drive it in June for the first time since 87. I beat that car mercilessly when I was 16. I am lucky to be alive and still have it in one piece. This pic is from 1986 right after I got the 72. This is what the Cougar looked like after I finished buffing the paint. A 79 TA SE is next and then the GTOs. Once again only thing anyone else will do is machine work. |

Steppenwolf... I remember my aunt and uncle sneaking me into “Easy Rider” at the drive-in on the floorboard of my uncle’s new Chevy 4X4 PU. This was 1972 (1973 body style truck) and the movie had been out a few years of course. I was seven and my aunt had my eyes covered through most of the movie. Damn Hippies! LOL! In late 1971 he bought a new 1971 Plymouth ‘Cuda 440, auto, purple with the white top, stripes interior and a set of rally wheels. He set me on his lap and let me drive it. That was the first time I ever drove a car over 70mph. My dad had let me drive before but only a real low speed, because he was saner, maybe? In 1977 my uncle bought a new 400, 4-spd black and gold TA. Man was that cool riding around in with “Smokey and the Bandit” out. It didn’t have T-tops though.

My first car was a 67 Firebird 400 car. I got it in 1979 when I was 15 years old. My Dad woke me up late one night to help him put the car in the garage after some late night partying which resulted in front end damage of the bird. He said you fix it up and its yours. I put a bone yard front clip on that car and drove it to school when I was 16 years old. My buddy had a 70 Chevelle with a 396back then and he wanted a piece of me. I told him bring it on. Well I beat him many times and never heard the end of it. None of my friends cars could beat me at that time. Thats what started it all. since then I have owned:
1965 GTO convert/4 spd 1974 Trans Am/4 spd 1969 GTO/4 spd and currently own a 65 GTO hdtp/4 spd I guess you could say I'm hooked! |

64 LeMans white on red 326/4bbl; I totalled it. Speed shifted into 3rd in a tight curve down at Lake Greenwood and spun off: cut down 2 pine trees. I was 14 and didn't even have a license yet; just a permit.

68 Firebird I bought in 1975. It had a non original 400 with a solid lifter cam, 12 bolt rearend, Muncie 4 speed, traction bars, headers, scatter shield, the whole load. I added fender flares and a hood scoop. I ran 15x10 aluminum slots with N50 tires. I learned quite a lot about cars keeping that thing running. It had a very nice black deluxe interior with a fold down rear seat and tinted glass.

I may score as the oldest first car (or at least oldest first car that was also a Pontiac) here.
I was 17 and only driving one year in 1962. I bugged my father for months to let me buy a car. The sales pitch that finally got him to relent was that I would then start paying for my own gas, and promised to continue washing the family car (a new '62 Pontiac Starchief 4-door hardtop). After much shopping, my choice was between a '57 Belair convertible, or a '58 Bonneville convertible. I chose the Bonneville, mainly because it was Tri-Power equipped and really fast. It was turquoise & white, white top, leather bench seat interior. Wonderbar radio, Speedometer "Cry Baby". Tons of chrome. It had about 35K miles, and I paid $1,000 for it. What a blast to drive! Spent my time drag racing around the streets of Baltimore. It seems as if at least one or twice a month I'd find myself at the same stoplight as another kid my age who drove a '57 Chrysler Imperial convertible, done all in gray primer (I always thought that was a neat thing to do to a big luxury boat). Our races always were a dead heat. We never met. Weird. I had that car for 31/2 years. It was rear-ended by a Corvair and totaled - bent frame. Shockingly the little Corvair suffered minor front end damage. I wish I had kept the intake set-up before it went to the junkyard. I've always missed that car.
