Div 3
For Stock Q-2, Randi Lyn Shipp has joined the Pontiac party.
So, here's how the Pontiac Stockers are qualified. Rob Holmes #8, Randi Lyn #22, Julie Biermann #32, Dwaine Davis #37, Brad Koivisto #58, Don Turk #100. https://www.nhra.com/results/2021/lu...ock-eliminator There are at least 3 other names on the list who have been known to drive Pontiac powered Stockers, in the past. Tommy Pettigrew is said to have switched to Chevy power, in his Bird. Todd Kuhn has been driving the 455 powered '70 GTO, for years. But this week he's running a much lower class, K/SA. Don't know what he's driving. Same for Billy Foder. He's running C/SA, which is higher than his '72 T/A runs. Will see what these guys are driving when DRC posts the Q-lists, probably late tonight or early Fri morning. Last edited by ponyakr; 09-30-2021 at 06:04 PM. |

Div 3
In Stock, Todd Kuhn is listed driving an Olds.
But, I'll have to add Billy Foder to the list of Pontiac powered Stockers. He is #101, listed driving a '70 T/A. Therefore, I assume that he has switched his Bird over from a 455 powered '72, to a 400 powered '70 model. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...er=30#indextop Other than the grills, not sure what else would have to be changed, to pass tech, nowadays. May not have even changed grills, since he's been running it as a T/A, without any wheel well flairs. Apparently, NHRA has not been near as strict on body rules as they were back in the mid '70's, when we had Stockers. Anyhow, since a 455 was not offered in a '70 Bird. He has to be running a 400. According to the Class Racer Info site, only 2 engines are legal for a '70 T/A, the 345hp RA3 & the 370hp RA4. Since the RA3 has a 366hp NHRA rating & the RA4 a 370hp rating, both engines will run the same classes. Both combos fall into a natural D/SA class. But, since NHRA will allow you to add or remove weight, in order to move up or down one class, Billy can, and obviously has, removed weight, in order to run C/SA. I'd guess he's running the round port RA4 engine, since it would be much more competitive than a RA3 engine, at almost the same weight. At 366hp, the RA3 engine combo would have to weigh at least 3294#, & the RA4 combo would have to weigh at least 3330#. I figure the RA4 engine would MORE than make up for the 36# of weight. So, I have to assume that we have another active RA4 powered Stocker ! Wonder if he has a spare RA4 head, in case he needs it ? John Schloe switched over to D-port heads, when he messed up a RA4 head on his '69 Bird Stocker. He's running mid 10's with D-ports. Here's the final SS Q-list. Don Kennedy #6, Robert Cruzen #8, Greg Meyer #17, & Travis Morgan #32. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...er=30#indextop Last edited by ponyakr; 10-01-2021 at 06:43 AM. |

The Clegg cars finished #18 in Stock & #10 in SS.
https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...er=30#indextop https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...er=30#indextop J.B. Clegg had driven both the Clegg SD455 SS Birds into the mid 9's. Keri Angeles has driven their '69 SS Bird into the 9.80's, at least. So, question for you guys. NOT counting the GT cars, has any other Pontiac powered Super Stock car ever dipped into the 9's ? I don't think so. But I could be wrong. Anyhow, I think this is very odd. Why do I say that ? I think there have been several legal Pontiac Stockers run down into the 10.30's. These are five I think have run that quick: John Schloe '69 Bird, Randi Lyn '67 Bird, Bob Aceves '68 Bird, Leo Glasbrenner '68 Bird, & Chris Stephenson '68 Bird. And, Scott Burton ran into the 10-teens with his RAIV '70 Bird. I think it was Norman Warling who posted here that Scott actually did run a high 9, but not in Stock elim competition. So, with just my common logic, it would seem that with all the things Super Stockers are allowed to do, it shouldn't be too difficult to make a Stocker 3 to 4 tenths quicker. (1) Any size Roller cam with roller lifters (2) Tranny brake (3) Lighter pistons/ thinner rings (4) Alum single plane intake (5) Limited MILD head porting ? (6) Big tires (7) Modified rear suspension system, such as ladder bars, 4-link, or ??? In my mind, all these things add up to nearly a half sec improvement. Am I wrong about this ? There have been several GT cars run in the 9's, with Pontiac 400 power. The SS engine rules are the same, whether the engine is in a GT car or a reg SS car. So, why have there not been more 9 sec Pontiac powered (NON-GT) Super Stockers ? |

In final Stock qualifying, Robert Holmes is #10, Randi Lyn #23, Julie Biermann #34, Dwainne Davis #47, Brad Koivisto #54, Billy Foder #90, & Don Turk #93
https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...UMMIT#indextop In SS, Don Kennedy is #2, Greg Meyer #8, & Travis Morgan #30. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...UMMIT#indextop I noticed that Robert Cruzen is not on the Q-list. I looked back to the results of the 1st race. He qualified with a 9.16. So, everything seemed to be OK, then. But, in the 1st round, he got a "No Time". So, he must have had a problem of some sort. Hope it is nothing major. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r=100#indextop Last edited by ponyakr; 10-03-2021 at 08:21 AM. |

Postponed 'til Monday, due to weather.
https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...er=30#indextop In Stock, Julie Biermann & Dwaine Davis survived E-1. Since Randi Lyn has won so many big races, I'm always interested in seeing how she did. Well. she cut a good .018 light. But not good enuff. Her opponent cut a .006 light & ran a 9.330, on his 9.33 dial-in. I think that's what they call an .006 "package". Hard to beat a package like that. https://www.nhra.com/results/2021/lu...ock-eliminator In SS, Greg Meyer & Travis Morgan survived E-1. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...er=30#indextop Tim Gillespie also won his 1st round of S/G. https://www.nhra.com/results/2021/lu...ults/super-gas So, I suppose there will be 5 Pontiac powered cars racing Monday, if they can all stay. "...Pontiac engine from Parsons and Myers racing engines..."
I've noticed that several quick Pontiacs run P&M engines. And some have Heads-Up do their heads. I remember reading that Bill Rink & Mike Morgan has used P&M for years. Can anybody name other currently active Pontiac powered class racers who run P&M engines ? IIRC, Brad Kiovisto uses Line Performance. I think Ronald prince does, too. Both cars have run in the 10's. There are now quite a few Pontiac powered Stockers that have run in the 10's. Would be interesting to know who built all those 10 sec Stocker engines. These Stockers are running quicker than the Super Stockers were running back in the '70's, when we were racing Stock. One example is: In '77, the H-O Racing Specialties SD455 '74 T/A set the SS/KA record, @ 11.31. LOTS of Pontiac powered Stockers have gone quicker than that. Of course, the changes in Stock rules have allowed much of that. Last edited by ponyakr; 10-03-2021 at 10:47 PM. |
