Default Pontiac Motors

I thought I'd post some pics.

The first is the salaried staff of the Pontiac Motors Foundry taken in 1945. My grandfather is in the first row, 5th from the right. He worked there from 1940 to 1965.

The second was taken in the Pontiac foundry, of the machines in the core room. My dad was a foreman in that area as was my grandfather. Those machines made the cores using what was called the hot box process.

The third is of Pontiac supervisors, foreman, area managers from all over the Pontiac complex, taken for a United Way fundraiser in 1975. Quite a contrast in style compared to '45!
My dad is in the back row, second from the right, with the mustache and big sideburns.
He was a foreman in the foundry as well.
He worked there from 1962 until 1987.

Since I work for GM, I guess that makes me 3rd generation, GM employee, but alas, not a Pontiac Motors employee!
If you asked my grandfather or dad where they worked, they'd answer Pontiac Motors, with no mention of GM.

I agree - those are some LOUD clothes. Did we really dress like that?

Think it's worth starting a new thread?

I know I've seen a few pics over the years on this site and others where someone recreated an original ad or promo pic with their car. In fact, I seem to recall someone did a u-turn on Woodward in a 68 GTO to recreate the famous ad, but the signs and trees were different now. Still very cool though!
Mike -

I forgot those were part of a set that I did over the GM shutdown one year:

In my defense I didn't get to frame the shots up as close to the originals as I would have liked. Plant Security came by and ran me off, so a couple of those were "shot from the hip", so to speak.

Those are really cool pics Keith. Interesting to see how little has changed over the last 50 years there.

Gregg
GM Tech Center (between 12 and 13 mile; between Mound and Van Dyke);

In front of the Design Studio.

You can see the Dome pretty easily in my photo. In the promo shot it is in the middle of the RH edge but nearly completely blends in with the gray sky.

I thought that looked familiar, my family owned the Marathon Station at 13 and Hoover and the one at 12 and VanDyke, there was a local hang out across the street called Pepies back in the day.

Keith, thanks for posting those! Wonderful pics! Did security know what you were doing, or did they even care? I would think seeing a vintage Pontiac sitting on their road, with a man taking a picture of it, would peek their interest.

A few years ago, a friend and I went to a Pontiac dealer with his 70 GTO to take a couple pics in front of their sign. Their lot was nearly empty, and there was a nice spot in front of their showroom window. Incredibly, not a single salesperson came out, not a single mechanic, not a single lot jockey. No one cared. One saleswoman finally approached, and she asked if she could help us, and we politely said no, we just wanted to taker a couple pics (we were dressed like we were hitting the golf course, so it's not like we just crawled out from underneath the car).

Ahh..the subject of clothes....and hair...and drugs....lots of drugs....

Their interest was peaked....and they cared.

(lol)

They weren't very nice about it, either (obviously they didn't know who I was!).

I was trying to be discreet but the fact that it was the GM wide summer shutdown probably was working against me in this case. Suffice it to say I wasn't able to spend as much time framing the shots as I would have liked, in order to duplicate the originals.

Thank you Greg. They did knock down and replant the trees on those little islands last year but other than that things stay pretty constant around here.

In fact - some of the buildings and offices are on the National Registry of Historic places so we are not legally able to change them.

These aren't photos but ads from 1960. I like how exaggerated they made the front of the Bonny look. Does anyone have a restored guide-matic that works?
