Am I measuring right? My pulley crank is 8" (part# 4810381B) but the water pump pulley size is 6.5" (part# 481040XT) O.D. and these are on my 68 GTO. They're stock, as far as I know. I'll measure the pulleys on my LeMans and Firebird when I get home tonight.

GTOJOE - that's a nice 67 RA you've got, I still drool over that article in HPP!
PS - what does Nunzi charge for that thermostat, and would the Hi-Flow Robertshaw suffice?

67BlackCherry,

The Thermostat was thrown in with the pulley for my test.....I don't know the cost and am not sure if Nunzi will be putting this together as a set....I would contact him. Thanks for the nice comments pal...

You're welcome. That issue of HPP is in the master bathroom, and a few years later I'm still all over that car!

Any idea how many of those original RA cars have been found?

Nice....

The pulley on my LeMans (455) is 6.5" and Firebird (400) is 7" - what now? With a smaller pulley, won't the pump move antifreeze through the radiator too fast?

As I said before, Nunzi worked out these bugs so he would be the one to talk to. I have experienced no problems so far....

Cherry- divide crank pulley dia by water pump dia to determine amount of overdrive. Compare that to the ratios listed by B-man and GTOJOE to see where you fall.

I'm still wondering at what RPM do the water pump bearings give up?

Sorry, I was being a lazy liberal and expecting someone else to do the work for me!

LOL...

Since I can't afford 200 bones for a pulley, can somebody tell me what factory pulleys (numbers and sizes) to use with a '68 timing cover to overdrive the water pump???

My testing reinforces what b-man stated. I ran about a half dozen pulley configerations, and the faster I turned the water pump shaft the better the cooling. Pontiac picked an 8" crank pulley and a 6.5" water pump pulley on their A/C cars -- and I'm sure it was because their testing said this was best.

Only thing I didn't try was the 8" bottom with the 5.5" top because the resulting math results were a little scary (about a 146% overdrive would have the water pump spinning over 8,700 RPM at a 6,000 RPM shift point).

"the faster I turned the water pump shaft the better the cooling. "

More evidence that the idea of "keeping the coolant in the radiator longer" is a myth.

I just spoke to Nunzi and he says that pulley is for 64-68 Pontiac V-8s and he has no plans to make one for 69 and up motors. I would think someone out there could make a 5.5-inch pulley.

Are the 8" and 6.5" pulleys available? The chances of finding them in a recycle yard is nil. My stock '76 pulleys are 7.25" crank and 8" WP. If I could find a 6.5" waterpump pulley I'd be happier than with my current setup but getting an 8" crank pulley to go with it would be great.

Even if Nunzi was going to do a pulley for later engines the price is too steep for me.

Summit Part # 13032 / that's a March Pulley, 6 1/8" for a later engine, $95.00.

You're welcome.

You think it's worth going from a 6.5" pulley to a 6 1/8" pulley?

Nope/Maybe. You'd be going from 1.115% overdriven to 1.183% overdriven. If you were having cooling problems it might help. If you weren't having cooling problems, why bother?

Yes, I think it's worth it. Tell me if it works, so I can do the same.

Easiest way to increase cooling is to use a crk and w/p plly from an a/c car.
