This is like asking us which one of our children do we like best?

Gotta vote for the 64.
the front grills of the 65 just don't seem to fit right?? they stick out too far?? I like the 1 year only 64 hood, (too bad it is not functional) the 64 rear tail lights are spectacular, and you can't beat the 4 spoke steering wheel. |

1965
Back in the late 1970's myself and Bruce Bethel always got this sense from friends and customers (Bethels Goat Farm) that 1965 was the favorite.
I still get that vibe today when talking to people at car shows that 65's are the most sought after in the GTO world. I have owned many 64-67, but my favorite is the 65.

Man! I'm all over the place on this one;
'64 - first year of the original musclecar Dual side by side headlamps make it look wider Prefer the engine turned dash insert to the woodgrain (even though I had the woodgrain dash in the car when I received it from the zone office. The car now has the engine turned dash again. Spinner hubcaps were just cool, had the aluminum wheels, etc but the Spinners are my favorite. My 64 is Grenadier Red with a White Convertible top and looks great. The Dash mounted tach and instrumentation was better as far as reading the tach. The engine was better on the 65 cars, everyone says on the cars but no real vote on that deal. (I owned a 65 and 66 at the same time as the 64 for a while). All were Tri-power 4 speed cars. So I vote 64 because it was the original, it was my first Pontiac, I still own it. I found out it is actually very rare, and it is paid for and in great condition. Tom V.

64 or 65 ?
I have owned both, own a '65 now. Prefer the lines of the '65, just like Motor Trend did back in the day by awarding the "Car of the Year" to the whole fleet that year. Never owned one with the original drivetrain, but '65 would get the nod there also for the upgrades that were made to the cylinder heads/intake especially. But C'mon Man...........they are both OUTSTANDING !

It's 65 for me. Its probably because I have had mine since high school, but still like the stacked headlights and the style of the hood scoop the best although I always wanted a 64 companion for it.

65 all the way except for the 64 engine turned dash.

65, this one in particular. But the 64 engine turned dash is better, especially when you stuff it with 65 rally gauges.

65 Rally Gages with the engine turned dash does a lot of good things for the GTO vs the 90 degree sweep earlier Dash Tach.

Personally...
the '64 wins out with the twin scoops and wood wheel. Tail light treatment is more appealing to me as well. Love the '65's...but they had already started getting heavier by then. "Functional air scoop"? Even opened up with a pan...the two inches of dead air above the hood renders them essentially non-functional. Seems like they wanted the '65s to look like little Bonnevilles what with the wood grain and extra chrome. JMHO.

I like the vertical headlights, grill, hood scoop and tail panel on the '65 better. Just is a prettier car to me. The dealer option ram air pan is a + too.

I do recall...
when the '65 was introduced...it lent itself well to the styling cues of the day...which was the lifted front end attitude. The canted headlight/taillight treatment was as if it was meant to be lifted.
