Dan, don't worry about what their estimate was for. You're allowed to take the car to any shop that you want. The shop takes the insurance company estimate and will contact them on any differences. If you have 10 estimates, you'll have 10 different amounts. Don't sweat it. Just be sure to pick out a good shop.

A friend of mine that's been a body man for about 20 years told me if you don't like the estimate the insurance company gives you, you can get a state arbitrator to look at it and just like in sports they have to pay what they say it's worth. Might be worth looking in to.

Are they paying for a rental car? If not then go get one...
It will always push the insurance company to pony up more $$$$.
It only takes a little while of getting hit with $300 / wk rental car bills before they are calling you.

Talking You need to know what to say...

Dan

In your state, there is a license bureau, inquire as to what it would take to issue a formal written complaint against your insurance company. Insurance companies will do damn near anything to avoid any sort of state reprimand. All you really need to do is get educated quickly on the correct terminology and procedure to make a formal complaint with the state. Then simply call and speak to the supervisor and make your threat while sounding like you know everything about state insurance licensing laws. My friend did this with citizens insurance after fighting for months over getting his truck repaired properly and not just cheaply. The supervisor was tripping over himself trying to satisfy my buddy so he would'nt notify the state.
