First off not all people that have to claim Chapt 7 are "dirtbags or scum" Im going through it right now I had an overspending Bi-polar ex wife.. When we got divorced. I got every payment including our(her) maxed out credit the house and the kids..... She got the Denali and its payments. well Im just making the payments on the other crap now.. some cards worked with me and others didnt But i was making my payments....Then she stoped paying for the truck. they came down on me .. I actully like the guy at the bank he was very honest. he said they need there money and I am the respnsable one so there coming after me. and he knows im getting screwed over but its the law.... now in the normal world if she stoiped paying for the truck I could gone and taken it and sold it.... But, I couldnt touch it because it was given to her in the divorce.(would have been theft) I got sued. and lost. and couldnt return their property. Soo more leagal fees and REPO charges. I even helped them find it(she was hiding it). The guy at the bank said that they are taking me to court for the remainder due. because I have a garnishable check(reliable job and work history)..When they get the judgement and ganish my check I can not make my house payment. and Ill lose the house. everything thats not worth much in it and ultimately my boys. so I had to claim chapt 7 I have no cable no cell phone no extras of any kind I have cut back as far as I could/can I have nowhere else to go. But Ill still be a dirtbag to most. Those debt elimination programs are not good either most make situations worse.

I have learned soo much listening to him.
My wife and I are on board with Dave Ramsey's financial plan. He makes a good point in saying most people aren't educated in how to manage their finances. I only wish I would have learned about managing my finances while I was in high school. I would be so much better off. Twenty years later, I now know how to manage my finances and live debt free. It's never too late to live a better life without debt, and it's never too early to learn how to manage your money.

There are many people who get into trouble. It doesnt make them dirtbags. Its the onee like your ex who slip through the system and earn the name dirtbag.

Hope things get better for you.

Sounds like the same old story to me. "It's not my fault because I was never 'educated' about how to manage my finances." Managing your money isn't rocket science, it's common sense. No one should have to teach it to someone. It's basically like a little kid saying "I want it, NOW!" Every one wants instant gratification and isn't willing to wait until they can afford it. Guys like Ramsey profit from people making mistakes and then wanting to blame someone else for it.

Many people who blame others, the system or whatever, are the same ones who abuse the system, file bankruptcy and then start the cycle all over again. That's where the stigma attached to the bankruptcy process comes from.

Only nice thing I had ever done for my ex...LOL!
Bill collectors are not smart; think of them as a rude telemarketer. If it happens again RECORD/DOCUMENT everything. Long story short: friend of the families owns a small hole in the wall videostore. His niece is in junior college and works there maybe a few hours a week under the table. Bill collectors started harassing him with over twenty calls daily looking for her thinking she was full time or something. He took my wifes advice and now has a large lawsuit against the company for harassment and threats. They have since left his niece alone.

Not always the case Rich. I know for a fact few people have enough $$$ saved for a long hospital stay. People get laid off, lose their insurance, etc, it can happen.
As far as buying a $50,000 SUV, $3,500 TV, electronics, credit cards, etc and getting stupid, Im with you there.

No, Brad, I didn't mean the people who have problems due to something unforeseen like medical bills, getting laid-off, etc. No one can plan for every problem.

I should know. I just spent over 85k on a new garage and soon after discovered my job was going away within less than a year. Fortunately, I'd practiced what I preach and didn't start construction until I had the money to pay for it. Still, It's a big hit and I'd rather not have to use my savings for the building.

It's big enough, 54x30 with a gambrel roof that gives me an attic overhead for storage, that I'll probably do something out of it. I can use my severance pay for seed money. I had planned on the building just being for my hobby, but things have changed. The plans are that the facility will close by the end of May.

I was taught that if I couldn't pay for it with cash, then I didn't need it. I used that same principle with credit cards, never spending beyond my means. Therefore, I have a high credit score, good credit and no debt. I had a good mom!

I was told always keep a minimum of three months pay saved.
My wife inherited some acerage a while back and we finally saved enough and had a new home built.
I dont like financing a vehicle, but I rather know my wife & children are safe (Onstar is a nice feature in her Saab)
