I sold my rough red/white 73 T/A with column shift and only 4 options

I've got a '73 Esprit with the original 350/TH350 column shift, as pictured in my avatar.
Bought it for 1600 and drove it home. Wouldn't pass emissions in Boulder county, so I waited until I moved to Weld county to register it. Ha!
This is my first ever project car and I've been collecting parts off Craigslist and found some good deals, Hooker Super Comps and a full 3" Flowmaster dual exhaust...found out it wouldn't fit with the column shift so I got a used megashifter and should be installing all this stuff in the next couple weeks. Also got a late 70s TA qjet and intake to replace the 2GC, got a guy that will help me figure it out...hoping these first steps will wake the car up quite a bit esp. when I get the 3.42 gears in...Ideally I'd like it to run the quarter mile faster than I did in High School, I ran the 400meter in just under a minute and boy was I tired!

I sold an 1970 Esprit in Feb of 2006 that was column shift turbo 400. Whoever ordered it wanted a sleaper, it had the 400 motor option (which came with the M40 tranny), safe-t-trac 12 bolt rear end, A/C, PS, PB, 7 inch wide Rally II's and rally guages less the tach.

I'm glad this exciting thread turned out as popular as the Super Duty thread, last post almost two years ago. What got me thinking on the oddball column cars again, is the new HPP article on the Judge, 1 of 11! I thought it would be something ultra cool, it was the cover car and big letters shouted 1 of 11 at me.... Now, don't get me wrong, it is an incredibly beautiful car, but the rarity is a 3 speed. Now, I probably wouldn't even change it out, just enjoy it as is, but it kind of to me is in the infamous Rare But Who Cares Department. Even on the nicest of cars, it isn't what you highlight as the cats meow. Nor are column shifters. Got me wondering how rare a column shift 72 F400 is. Probably in the 1 of 11 department or something really low..... I don't think this is a traceable stat, as I've never seen numbers on auto console vs non console cars. I wish PHS would spreadsheet enter all this stuff so the data could be sliced and diced.... (dream on)

I'd wager that your car is one of probably 200 (give or take) built as a column shift...

the only thing that makes that GTO really stand out (number wise) is the Muncie three speed in a Judge.

Ok, so what do you think would be more desireable;
1971 Firebird Formula L78/M13
1971 Firebird Formula L78/M40 (column shift)

Honestly I'd wager that the M13 car would eek out the auto car...

I have read that the M13 was near indestructible, and actually the gear spread was very good for quarter mile runs.

I for one cannot wait to get my car done and compare it to a 4spd car(!)

If my number of 200 '71 column shift Formulas is remotely correct, then we're still only talking about 3.4% of the automatic cars, or 2.6% of the total '71 Formula production.
