The long test run is the best. My car ran crappy today as far as the heat... It never got over 180* But at idle she creeped up to 200*. But then I remembered that I had changed from a 2" spacer on my mechanical to a 1" spacer. In an effort to get a good 50/50% of fan in and fan out of make shift shroud.

No substitute for the correct shroud. I will put the old spacer in until I can get a "real" shroud. SHe ran 170* all day with the entire fan "IN" the shroud. Go figure. Curious to see the results.

good luck

Dave

Finally took a ride today in 85 degree weather. Around town and back roads the temps stay less than 180, however as soon as on the highway doing 70+ mph it goes up to around 200. It is much better then before, still warmer than I prefer, but good enough.
Other than an expensive radiator or a 4 speed tranny, it will stay as is.

Took it out yesterday in 90+ degree weather (no fun driving a non A/C car with headers and 3" exhaust on a hot day ), same thing happened, it is ok until get on the highway, the temps will go right up, will idle all day around 190 and maybe 200 when driving on back roads.

My 69 GTO with a/c on will run 160 on the highway. It has a Griffin radiator, severe duty clutch, stock fan, points distributor converted to Pertronix and stock NOM 400.

Default radiator

The fact that it overheats during freeway running typically means insufficient radiator capacity. How old is your radiator, and what is its capacity?

Swapping my desert cooler 4-row for the Griffin dropped my temps 20 degrees on the highway.

you are not hurting that motor at all at a 200 temp. GM designed it to run at 190 to 210 any way. I wish mine ran that cool. the trans am red lines at 260 but bad stuff can start to happen at 240

Make sure the lower radiator hose is in good shape with the spring still inside. Had the same problems as you one time and it was the hose sucking shut at highway speeds. New hose solved my problem.

I think it is the radiator, the motor is a Pdude built 400, stroked and bottom filled. It is a Dessert Cooler radiator, I think it is a 3 core. Hoses are new so are the belts. I just don't have $500+ right now to get a new radiator and electric fans.

Steve

I would be very satisfied running your temps on my 400. There is a wealth of information on the forum, it certainly has help me bringing down my temp. As George Kujanski said, it probably a combination of things. Good Luck Rich

The 400 I have in my 66 runs at 180 on the highway. Highest it gets is 190 to 195 stopped at traffic lights. Had it out Tuesday here and the temperature was 98 with high humidity.... no problems. I had more of an overheating issue than the Goat did. LOL

http://stores.shop.ebay.com/PERFORMA...__W0QQ_armrsZ1
my 79 t/a 4speed 400 is a cool 175 in town and 180ish doing 65-70mph.
I dont even use the 2 12" fans to keep it that cool. all clutch fan. the 12"s are on it but not used. going to see if I need them for when it gets hot. in the 80's now.
