Nice work enjoy the detail. My first Pontiac engine was a 59 w 65 GTO piston and heads,in my 55 . Had to make an upside down starter.Had to get rid of car when I got the 63GP,no room.

Looks like a Walden intake or the newer version McQuillen is making ion the left. You ought to see McQuillen's new "Z-12" aluminum version of Z-11 heads! Pretty slick work!
My 470-409 made a click over 600 HP with the dual plane and 600cfm Eddy carbs, 750s did not make any more.

Street racing buddy in high school had a 56 Chevy wagon with a straight front axle he put a 55 glass front end one(it was a "deal") we called it a 55& 1/2. Reher and Morrison 350 SBC (R&M were just starting out and had a SBC/Maverick M/P car) and 4 speed that was a wild ride!

I own the 57 Chieftain. I wanted to say thanks to Calvin. I'm very happy with the results as well as the time he took with me to get what I wanted. Thanks Calvin!

Hello Skip,

The intake is a McQuillen, had to do a bunch of work to it. The port at the plenum was small as compared to the flange side, we ended up welding up the sides to get shape in the manifold and get enough area in it. You can see how we filled in the signature of the intake, a before and after.

The car picked up 4 MPH, but hasn't run any quicker as the convertor is slipping a bunch. Planning to dyno the engine and do a back to back comparison and figure our what's needed for a convertor.

I do want to think there was a nice 57ish Chieftain at the Pontiac Southern Nationals in Dallas years ago with a RAIV headed motor in it,I think from Okl.

That is a real clean car too should be a nice project.

Calvin be interested to hear about that project PM me please.

Just wanted to give a little more info on my 57. The plan is to build a period correct M/P car. I bought an old Hydro-Motive trans from Calvin. In addition I had an old B&M Hydrostick trans. It's 1955 slant pan hydro built for unblown competition. I also have an NOS Ansen shifter. We were able to make one good trans between the two. I needed an older block to run the 55 bellhousing for the 4 speed hydro. Had to machine the flywheel. I wanted to run iron heads and dual quads. Thanks again Calvin and Steve.

When was the HydroMotive first built? If before about 1967 you should check that the bushing in the front of the front pump is pinned in place. The one I got new in 1966 didn't have it pinned, and the bushing eventually spun (but only after thousands of miles). HydroMotive started pinning them shortly after that.

You may already be aware- that Ohio George ran nothing but HydroMotive units in all his early AA/G machines.

If you haven't driven a HydroMotive before, you may not know that it cannot be manually shifted into 1st gear above about 8 mph. It isn't really a limitation, but it surprised me when I first discovered it. The hydro's reverse lockout (via the governor) is initiated as the valve body's shift quadrant moves below the old "low" position (now 2nd gear)- blocking movement into the new "1st" position.

You could also file two small notches in the pump bushing bore and stake the pump bush in place using Red Loctite on it too.
I just threw my '59 cast iron bellhousing in the scrap , been tripping over it in the workshop for years.

I had slant plant pan in mine modified by local trans guy.Ran well with 4:33 gears. Oh l learned hard way about modified flywheel !! Boy that was disheartening. Read about it in B&M ad.
