So the 69 stripes are crappy? Or they were crappy 15 years ago? Or are you saying the 70 style stripes I bought last year were crappy?

Kind of hard to have sympathy these days for inferior graphics. The technology very affordable to produce excellent quality, exact reproductions of graphics. At least from the graphic design end of it ... basic software, affordable hardware and super easy to update if someone sends you a known proper example.

I don't know anything about the substrate technology, which is equally important, but my guess is that materials technology for the "stickers" has increased tremendously even in the last 20 years.

Heck, even CNC cutters for stickers are affordable now. It's possible, that with a little research on available materials, that decent quality reproductions of small items could be made at home on a good quality color laser printer. I know it would be easy enough to get the graphics dead on with an original example, a scanner, editing software.

Anyway .. point being, in this day and age, really no excuse for incorrect or poor quality reproductions of decals/stickers. It's a technology that is very, very mature at this point in time.

I wouldn't call the 69 phoenix stripes crappy, but they could look a lot better than they do, same with the original Pontiac 69 stripes. I think perhaps they made the stripes exactly like the factory stripes with all their flaws on purpose for an authentic look. The 70 decals I have seen don't have the mismatch in stripe widths that the 69 decals do. I used to have GM stripes on my car back in the 70's, and they had horrible mismatches, and were printed on white film and the edges turned white after a year and a half.

I know what you mean, with time they get a "washed out" look. Did not realize the backing was the cause.

Thanks for the post, David.

So, you and your company will be receptive to additions and changes if an enthusiast sees one of your decals that is not just right?

i am always open to bettering my product, but yall have to remember, i dont make these sticker whilly nilly, i always have an original or a GM blueprint to make these off of. When we started in 1977 we were making stuff as fast as we could being a new market. we have redone alot of old artwork to make them better. So , yes i am receptive to the errors and would like to fix them. As far as new items. to get anything approved its 250 bucks for GM to research it so if its not a super popular car line i really cant see making something to sell 1-5 of a year. just not money smart!! my personal email address is dosborn@osborn-reproduction.com give me a hollar!!
Thanks guys we want yall to be happy with our products!!

Can you reproduce air cleaner decals off of pictures?

I wish there was a way you could have GM approve the framework (Trademarks/wording/size for the $250) of the decal (1970-2 had the same dimensions/artwork, other than air filter number/pick code/part number. Same with '73-5 or '76, etc.). Then just pay a per piece "royalty" for the use of air filter number/pick code/part number. Better for the little guy to keep up sales and enough sales may work out better for GM too. I know, wishful thinking.

I'm well-versed in graphic arts and printing. It's difficult to make perfect reproduction labels. Labels shrink from under-hood heat and age. Many original labels were done using Flexographic printing, which would be extremely difficult to reproduce digitally. Some of the old fonts don't exist in the computer age. There were plant-to plant variations, and mid-year changes. Not an easy business to be in!

Tell me about it...

I spent hours on a Photoshop program to create this from a shriveled up decal on my original R89WP. Correct placement and fonts are of the utmost importance to me, and bug the sh_it out of me...

Some gUYS out there wouldn't know a correct font if it bit them on their ass.

Ty, not a lot of people know that. There is many diff variations of a certain item especially decals, and because some of the decals i offer don't quite match theirs exactly they say mine are wrong. I either have an original or a GM blueprint on the item i reproduce. I think some people think we make these off the top of our head which is not the case!!

i do not make battery decals like that, Because if someone sticks that on a cheap ass battery and it explodes. they are gonna sue you, the battery mfg, and delco, because there sticker is on the other battery. I do not want those liabilities!!

The battery decal would be for a small market anyway.

The Corvette crowd uses them too and that would be a decent market. Your text font looks a little better than mine. What did font style you use? What label dimensions did you come up with?
I also have a mid-70's Delco Freedom battery that could be used for labels.

I remember back in the day there were variations on original cars. My bumper jack decal was printed in with black ink instead of the normal blue for example. I've seen air cleaner decals with variations. Did Delco have them printed and distributed or was every division responsible for their own? In any case there were probably several print runs form various vendors. 5 to 6 million air cleaner decals per year in 50 varieties done via a two color Flexographic process might overwhelm a single source. Plus the Flexographic pads were only good for a limited number of copies before wearing out. you can see how variations happen.

Less risk than a bumper jack label. General business liability insurance should cover it along with good instructions, disclaimers and warnings. When the labels were first required, the battery manufacturer's association didn't know what the feds wanted for wording. I have a 1974 letter on this.
