the ground cable that goes from the battery to the block. i found it by checking for ground faults with a digital volt-ohm meter. found a few you tube vids on how to check for ground faults. i had tried for weeks to find a drain. there weren't any drains but the alternator was not charging the battery as it should have, due to a faulty ground cable not letting the juice get back to the battery. the worst thing was that it was intermittent.

Ok, first test with coil wire disconnected.
Before cranking, fully charged battery 13.4v. While cranking 10.5v. I will check the ground wire from battery or just replace both ground and positive cables to see if anything changes.

another on to test is a voltage drop test. see the vid.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_B0LjwQbUbg there are many tests for voltage drops, alternator, starter etc. check you tube for more vids. that's how i tracked down my parasitic drain. it was not a drain, it was a bad ground cable. i tried every fused circuit thinking it was a parasitic drain and they were all good. last resort was testing the cables. should have tried that first; however, the cables LOOKED GOOD and were only 5 years old. my bad. ciao, mario64 |

The time you drove the car and let it sit for awhile and then poor cranking indicates to me you may have an intermittent in your alt/reg wiring, probably not charging when you were driving.
Connect a voltmeter to the car and observe it when driving, etc. to make sure it is constantly charging the battery. George

This morning, before starting the car the battery voltage was 12.9v.
I checked every where I could think of for ground, cables, block, frame straps, alternator case, etc. When I started the car the voltage at the battery was 14.5v. As the car was running I held the voltage meter on the battery and watched the voltage drop slowly to 13.1v. George mentioned alt/regulator wiring might be the issue. The regulator and wiring is the original. Could the regulator be the issue?

The voltage should be constant at least at 13.8. Dropping to 13.1 is just wrong and indicating something is wrong with the charging system. That would xplain not being able to start after driving and then no start. You've unknowingly been driving powered only by the battery.
What alternator/ regulator combo do you have? long term, install a voltmeter along with engine temp and oil pressure to monitor your system better. George

If you have a OEM regulator, it could be faulty, the internal voltage-sensing relay could be bad, or the wiring intermittent.

Brand new alternator, original regulator and wiring. Checked again on voltage and upon startup 14.5v at battery then slowly dropping.
I'll order a new regulator and go from there. Thanks and will keep up to date on the progress.

i believe george is correct. it sounds like the regulator. you said the alternator is new. if you can get it bench tested fro free, i would do it just to eliminate it from being faulty. the regulator wiring is an easy check as most of it is available for visual inspection. the important wire in the regulator is the ground wire. yes, i know, another ground wire to check!!! but mostly a 60 old regulator gets tired and possibly the internal contacts have worn out.

Belt is tight, I actually adjusted it again after some run time.

sometimes the regulator can get stuck.
try tapping on the mount and see if voltage changes. Dont dent the can,it can be transferred to the replacement.

Success! New regulator installed and the voltage at the battery is holding steady at 14v, no slow voltage drop. Yay!
