Nope. Cowl Induction was an optional package. Actually, most '69 Z's did NOT have Cowl Induction, unlike how we see them at shows & for sale "restored" today.

I think I am going to try to keep this car if i can. The more I look it over the more I am amazed at how solid the body & floors are on this thing. I pressure washed the underneath & the floors are mint! They still had the factory overspray and no undercoat was ever sprayed on them. The rear wheelhouses have factory undercoat with a little body oversray on them also and are solid as a rock! Some idiot did beat the crap out of the trans hump around the gas pedal to allow more clearance for the clutch arm? Should straighten out pretty easily though.
Was also able to turn the motor over by hand. I am not even going to try to start it. I have good Chevy guy that is going to tear the motor down & check everything to see what it will need. Cleaned the body up a little today & bought a set of ralleys for it from a friend. Removed the interior & carpet also to clean the seats. The original carpet was nasty & smelled bad and will definitely need replaced . All of the underlayment/sound deadener was in pretty good shape but I think i will replace it also. The springs are broken & will need replaced on the drivers seat and probably will need recovered also. The door panals are pretty nice & I think I will reuse them. I might try to get all the mechanicals done ,replace some interior stuff & try to drive it this summer as is without doing anything to the body. Then next winter give it a full resto. Here are a couple more pics from today Brent Last edited by 6804gto; 03-07-2010 at 12:17 AM. |

I may be a died in the wool Pontiac NUT, but I would keep that car if I possibly could. An acquaintance of mine had one, flat hood, no spoiler and the kind of gearing the little Mouse needed. I used to love to hear that car go through town. Between the gearing and the solids, it just sounded mean. He bought it to drag race and he definitely did.
There were some real nice street cars in my home town, 2-Yenko Camaros, a bunch of 409/425's, including A Bel Air and 2-matching Impalas owned by brothers. There was a couple of AMX's, a couple of Thunderbolts, including one that I just missed buying, in '82, for $2,200 and a '62 Super Duty from just outside of town. GTx's, 442's, GTO's and LS6's. One of the Chevelles had a Rock Crusher and sounded like a threshing machine, you could hear it coming a block away. The Z/28 came with a 30/30 Duntov cam, right? I'm pretty sure the local one had an even more radical one. A lot of cam for a small engine. A guy I hung with in the Army had a '57 Bel Air with a 301 and ran a 375 horse "Fuelie" cam and that was radical in its own right, but nothing like that Z/28. I've gotta say, there is nothing that sounds like a small inch Small Block with a solid cam with some overlap. You may not love Chevies, but, if you're any kind of motorhead, you've got to love that sound.

I know you can't always tell from pics but i swear, I wouldn't touch the body. That car looks great. It'll just be another repainted, restored showcar. The survivors are few and far between and in a class of their own...Well worth preserving as such...But that's just my opinion.

I agree with Greg and Patrick.
If the body/original paint/vinyl top and the rest of the car is as nice as the pics seem to show I'd skip the full resto and concentrate on getting the mechanicals and interior up to snuff, using as many original items as practical. Not only will this save you some time and money, I really think it would enhance the value. This car is truly a rare find. Good luck, Bart |

As long as we're voting, I'm with the rest of the gang - leave it the way it is and drive the **** out of it.

I will definitely leave the vinyl top alone & probably just clean the bottom side of the car because it has no rust on the pans or wheelhouses. The firewall will need repainted to look presentable & the front subframe is currently painted white so it will need redone also. As far as the body it looks much better in the pictures as it has many small dings & a lot of crazing in the paint. The paint on the hood above where the carb sits is all burnt off probably from a carb backfire at sometime. The bottoms of the fenders have some small rust spots showing threw also. I understand what you guys are saying about keeping it unrestored but I am not talking about doing a full blown nut & bolt resto. I just want to make it more presentable. Both of my GTO,s are done to almost concours levels & I do not want to get that involved again. I am going to pull the motor this week & have it checked out. It does turn over & was supposed to be rebuilt about 10 years ago & never fired but I just want to be safe. I will try to update how the motor turns out. |
