Bill, you may have said this already but I'm being lazy and asking, What's the bore on your block? I may have a block with splayed caps already installed available. Thanks!

Its 4.210". I just picked up a 70 Bonneville with a complete 455 HO engine, but not going to tear that down for a race block. 60k miles on an all original engine, carb, air cleaner everything.

I doubt if this cam lobe is fixable or worth fixing?

Made some headway. Block is back after being cleaned up, cylinders rehoned and line honed after replacing broken cap and bent main stud. . Went with new longer dowel pins since 1 got bent. Added oil restrictors. 3 new icon pistons and upgraded to Molnar rods from Paul K. And another factory crank.

Is that a crack on the main saddle by the outer bolt hole? That's scary! Good luck.

So did you use caps off the 428 motor?

Yes, one of the 428 caps lined up good enough with the dowel pins to get it line honed. That was for the 2 cap position. # 3 lifted right off the dowel pins with not much effort and had a little fretting, that's why I went with the longer dowel pins.

No, the caps were from I had many years ago that was cracked. I have a 67 400 that's getting splayed caps and also have a complete 455 HO so I should be ok for now.

Back at it again, exhaust valve broke and cracked the cylinder wall. It will get a sleeve , kre is going to fix the head so it can be re cncd at their place. All the valves will get replaced as well.

I feel for you. I had a titanium retainer break, exhaust valve dropped and caused havoc at 130 mph including a hole in the piston, no damage to IAII block. Got the chamber repaired no problem and new pistons.

A friends Mopar had a Ti retainer give up, but in the end it turned out to be the valve spring who's top coil snapped off that made for his failure.

Anyway in terms of Ti retainers on non Beehive or Conical springs I would only run Manleys from what I have seen!

Only the end of the valve broke off, spring and retainer were all still intact.

Coil bind, foreign fragment caught between the valve face and seat, (piston piece, ring), or loss of spring harmonic control, (surge), are the three most common reasons for retainer failure. Titanium metal fatigue is pretty rare. My comment applies to QUALITY titanium components, (Manley, Ferrea, CHE and a few others)
