One could argue that, according to the article, since there was a 16 year old girl sunbathing (the neighbor), that the drone was hovering near, could the drone owners/operators be charged the same as you would a peeping Tom? With only the details from the article to go by, I say you could.

The cops should have confiscated the sim card.
A good neighbor has been messing around w small inexpensive drones to gradually work his way up to more sophisticated models for use for hunting, fishing, and/or general jacking around on his cheapo model, the SIM card is in the hand control unit w the color LCD screen that too can be used for playback...so hovering over anyone's pool or property not so innocent.

Speaking of car shows: attended a SA, TX car show few yrs back were a fellow local club members' pop-up shade tent (properly anchored, etc.) was picked up w a sudden wind-shear and got airborne 10+ feet in the air, smack-down landed on a mint '67 400 Ragtop FBird's hood denting & damaging the hood and fender tops. IIRC - well over $1,800 damage and paint was Metallic blue, near impossible to blend, and IIRC the car ended up having to have a total repaint.

Upside - club member was as upset as car owner and made good (using homeowners liability?) to pay for repairs and damage.

Downside - who knows what, if any, insurance or liability coverage any Drone Jockey possesses at any location.

Lawyers must be licking at their chops thinking of all of the potential drone associated litigation's and billable hours!

Another vote for the shooter!

We have a law against discharging firearms in our town. There is no such law against bow & arrow or crossbow. I have a crossbow.

A paint ball gun would have worked just as well. The guy could have claimed he thought it was a UFO trying to kidnap him for probing... ;-)

Not to hijack, but paint ball guns FWIW.

My house got egged 8-10 years ago over a girl my son was seeing in HS.
Then paint balled a week later.
Officer said if they use paint gun again, it's legal to defend with real bullets!
Since knew who it was, where they lived, type of cars, called their parents to warn them.
Plus the police could see our front yard from a auto repair center at 4 way light 5-6 house down.
Never had a problem after that. Lot of flashing lights late nights next couple weeks

The way to stop a drone is to jam the signal.

There are companies that market to the government and law enforcement that have developed the ability to take over a drone and land it safely. It was determined that just jamming the drone was dangerous as they would drop and causes damage.

And the more chance of these things getting shot down (like this guy did), may make drone jockeys think twice about flying these pieces of crap over top of things they shouldn't be doing. Now I am glad we never had "flying cars" or people would be hovering in them over people's house too. (Or getting drunk and crashing them into my roof or something).

Our hero was properly charged, Shooting a gun in the air, in the city is asking for trouble,,no telling where or who the projectile(s) will hit.

If the drone was flying as low as reported you could knock it out of the sky with anything you had handy and could toss or swing that high. Pretty sure a lawn chair would have worked and made for a very fun story to tell.
How about a fishing rod? Cast out and catch the thing on a hook and reel it in. Or send up your own drone with a gun and chase it away.

I'm thinking a Spud Launcher, wonder what the cops would say about tossing(shooting) a potato at it. ?? Plenty of mass there for impact damage and is biodegradable!

Fish hook not needed (still need a sinker) as the line getting wrapped up in the rotors is pretty much assured.

Want to see a drone operators worst nightmare?

I don't know why everyone refers to these radio controlled (r/c) airplanes/helicopters as drones. The FAR's for flying r/c's have been around for years, that's why the article referred to Acadamy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) for input. An r/c requires it to be close enough for the pilot to see it. A drone can be flown in Afganistan from a workstation in Kansas. A drone is a high dollar sophisticated aircraft, not a model helicopter. There are currently no FAR's that allow the flight of unmanned aircraft in uncontrolled airspace in the U.S., so flight must be in controlled airspace, like a TFR, or it must be flown under the r/c model airplane rules. That little aircraft that was shot down with a shotgun was a radio controlled airplane, not a drone. Drones are used in war zones and border security, and other government missions, not to fly a couple hundred feet to take pictures of someone's house.

Semantics.

Part of the Robotics glossary:

"A drone, in a technological context, is an unmanned aircraft.

Drones are more formally known as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). Essentially, a drone is a flying robot. The aircraft may be remotely controlled or can fly autonomously through software-controlled flight plans in their embedded systems working in conjunction with GPS. UAVs have most often been associated with the military but they are also used for search and rescue, surveillance, traffic monitoring, weather monitoring and firefighting, among other things."

"Other things".
Target sounds like a good use.

It's not semantics when you consider the rules under which an unmanned aircraft and an r/c model must fly. They are not in the same league, light years apart.

Surprised the FBI, CIA, TSA, Border Patrol, Texas Rangers and LLE didn't show up to cuff & stuff the perb. Never mind reading of Miranda Rights. We don't need no stinking rights.

Yeah, I got some goose loads left over from last season, but they're steel shot. Guess that would work.

Just this week we had a guy with one of those damn things at our cruise in . He was asked in no polite terms to take the thing out of the show field before he hit one of the cars. He got mad & said he had a car there so he had a right to fly it. He was asked to leave if he wouldn't put it away ,,,, He left mad.
